Front sight

Why is the front sight set back an inch from the muzzle on dangerous game bolt action rifles? It is on my M-S 1910 and I have wondered why. Jacques Lott mention it in his article about magazine rifles but didn’t go into any detail.

When was your M1910 proofed?

Some early MS have the 'set back' front sight and some don't. My 1922 proofed M1910 Take Down Model does not.

Most that I have seen on the 'net with 'set back' that include proof dates seem to be early in production. Perhaps Kuduae or someone knows if there was a time period wherein the sights were rebated and then not?

I've long wondered about this, myself, as well as if there is a date range coinciding with the front ring stampings of 'Patent Mannlicher Schoenauer; or 'Original Mannlicher Schoenauer'.

My M1910 Carbine was made in 1910 or thereabouts, and there is no set back to the front sight...

Proofed in 1914, full stock, rifle length barrel.
