Croc death renews hunt debate

September 27, 2005

Attack ... the hunting of crocodiles is again up for debate / AFP

THE latest fatal crocodile attack in the Northern Territory has sparked renewed calls for trophy hunting of the killer reptiles.
Englishman Russell Harris, 37, was snorkelling with a friend in a popular swimming spot off Groote Eylandt, near Arnhem Land, when he disappeared on Saturday afternoon.

His American wife was relaxing on remote Picnic Beach with the other man's partner, but the group became worried and alerted police when Mr Harris failed to return by late afternoon.

Mr Harris' body was found on Sunday at the mouth of Eight Mile Creek, about 1.5km north of where he was last seen.

"It's a shocking tragedy," police Acting Sen-Sgt Stephen Pfitzner said yesterday.

"There are a number of injuries on the deceased and also there was a crocodile sighted very close to where the deceased was."

Mr Harris, from Nottingham, had worked for five months as technical services superintendent at BHP Billiton's Gemco mine on the remote island.

Authorities were yesterday hunting the 4m crocodile so they could move it to another area.

The NT Government has long been lobbying the Federal Government to lift a 33-year ban on trophy hunting of crocodiles, as it grapples with an explosion in croc numbers.

Environment Minister Ian Campbell is due to make a decision in coming weeks, but has indicated opposition to it.

About 75,000 crocodiles live in Northern Territory waterways, of which 600 a year can be legally harvested for their skins.

Crocodile hunter Mick Pitman said it was time to allow crocodile hunting.

"They are eating people, eating dogs, cows and horses. We are sick of it up north," Mr Pitman said.

As much as it is tragic that he lost his life,
isn't it about time people took responsibility for
your own actions.

Everyone knows not to swin in the NT because of
Crocs so why does the croc get the blame ?

Croc blamed for snorkeller's death
Northern Territory police believe a snorkeller who was found dead on Groote Eylandt, in the Gulf of Carpentaria, yesterday was killed by a crocodile.

The 37-year-old man from Alyangula was snorkelling with a friend at the Picnic Beach recreation area when they drifted apart late on Saturday afternoon.

Police searchers found his body yesterday morning one-and-a-half kilometres away in an area where a four metre crocodile had been seen swimming nearby.

Acting Senior Sergeant Stephen Pfitzner says there is not much doubt the man was attacked by a croc.

"Police strongly suspect that's what has occurred," he said.

"There are a number of injuries on the deceased and also there was a crocodile sighted very close to where the deceased was located."

Human bone near croc attack site
A bone found near the site of a crocodile attack on Queensland's Cape York in August has been identified as being human.

Police say forensic tests have confirmed that the bone, found on the banks of the Normanby River, was that of 60-year-old Barry Jefferies.

Mr Jefferies was pulled from a canoe by a crocodile while he was fishing.

The crocodile believed to have been responsible for the attack has been destroyed.

In reply to:

"They are eating people, eating dogs, cows and horses. We are sick of it up north,"

I would have thought ranchers would have taken matters into their own hands with the 3 "S" rule: Shoot, Shovel, Shut-up.

Bakes,

So she couldn't accept that you shouldn't go swimming in croc infested waters
without accepting responsibility.

Again, although it is sad, at least the friends of the diver who dies yesterday
said he knew the consequences of what he was doing.

Too many people buck pass in this world and it's pretty clear in the NT
that you don't do what these people have been doing.

Bakes,

I think you were in the right.

If I understand your email correctly,
he and his Quad bike were washed away in a swollen river
which means he was trying to cross it.

As I said in my post, that is his responsibility for his actions.

Hey well, she was upset and if it made her feel better to get up me then so be it. Don't know what my being in the RAAF had anything to do with my comments.

People need to take responsibility for their actions. In a whole range of areas.

While it is hard on relatives, their grief is their problem, not societies. No reason to rub it in people's faces of course, if you know you are talking to the relative. Forums are anonymous to a large extent. You never know who is out there so it is a problem.

But these forums are always very reasonable in what is said. Life is tough sometimes.

I still find it amazing that people go snorkelling or diving off the coast of the NT and then find it shocking when they get 'snapped'.

I was talking to a couple of fellows recently and they were discussing the purchase of a new ski boat for the NT. I asked them where they went skiing? On the coast? They said, no way, they ski on some lake or resouvoir somewhere where there are no crocs.

I saw a video once in which a man travelling in a safari park with his family, saw a group of lions feeding. He got out of the car and started to film the scene with his video camera when suddenly a lion, which he had'nt noticed, came from behind and attacked him.The feeding lions also joined in and within seconds the man was torn to pieces.
Although I felt sorry and sad but the point is that it was the man's fault as the animals did only what was natural to them.In this case also the croc, being a predator that he is ,did what he is supposed to do,i.e.protect his territory.
Should the croc be killed for its actions?

Adam Taylor. A fair few station owners would be following the shoot, shovel and shut up rule. Even with a few getting picked off this way ,they are still building up. I know of a recent time where a property owner wanted a 19 foot trouble croc ,ummm ,dealt with. (hypotheticaly of course). If he had legitamate hunters in ,he could have made good money of it instead of letting it drop to the bottom. The general feeling is that they didnt mind it a while ago ,when they might loose on cow a month to crocs ,but with the numbers and sizes building up ,crocs are starting to go through a lot more cattle ,and occaisional tourist.

Then maybe we need to train the crocs to go more for the tourists and less for the cattle !!!
