Come up for sale on our auction site. Looks like an opened up standard 98 military action? Have heard of Kettner but haven't seen any examples until now.

link don't work, kettner was an old german mail order house but they became realy big in the 60s,70s, 80s. around 2000 they came in financial trouble and closed in germany, still exist in austria. I am sure this 404 use a common standard 98 action open up for the 11,2x72/404. they allways had such "low" budget big game rifles, remember them from the early 90s in .458 win mag.

this is not one of standard rifles I had in mind, looks like an Mauser Oberndorf made rifle

they were making a special edition in 1998 , could be this is one of them. I try to remeber how they were looking than.

The bottom metal using a bullet point to open the floor plate and having small screws to lock into the action screw heads is military and I assume the action is ex M98 military too. The barrel is obviously a modern addition as is the sights and sling fittings. Nice wood but the the inletting around the bottom metal is not perfect.
I recall seeing Kettner catalogues that my friends had when I was staying in Germany back in the early '80s and I may have visited one of their shops as I bought a pair of Optolyth binoculars from a big gun shop at one stage. They had a very nice Whitworth Mauser in 375H&H on display for sale with 10 or so packets of Kynoch 375 H&H ammunition. I would have liked to purchase the Whitworth but already had my Oberndorf 404 Mauser so didn't need another DGR.
BTW 10.75x73 is the European designation for the 404 Jeffery.

well, this is not realy my field of interest and its 25 years after but iirc, they were making a special edition of "mauser big game rifles" because of the 100 year mauser 98 jubilee. this could be one of them but I can't remember how they look. what I heard sometimes was that this rifles were not realy make by the mauser factory but some of the guys who were big in making mauser action hunting rifles - maybe Prechtl?

not a bad rifle but not what I would give up 15k for ,its a standard length action military style bottom metal , which is a bit rare seeing that its an Oberndorf action ,could have been built from a canbalized Oberndorf type C army hunting rifle .... Paul

I agree. A suitable rifle for big and dangerous game, bot the value is far below $15,000.

Far below indeed. Nicely done, though.

Gentlemen,
years ago there was an offer in egun for a 98 rifle, buildt by Frankonia in-house in caliber .404 rimless NE. The system from DWM (!) was the standard size with the standard magazin size (capacity two rounds), looked like a former military system.
The rifle was proofed for the 404 in Munich in 1998, barrel length was 65cm, with 98% blueing and overall very good condition of stock and barrel.
The rifle was sold for around 1200 €, so the requested price (for the piece in discussion) in the thousands is ridiculous.
best regards Rolf

because DWM was not making hunting rifles this action started as a military rifle, maybe one of the high quality pre WW 1 south american mauser.
