Shooting a shotgun accurately
      #382301 - 04/02/24 02:48 AM

I want to shoot slugs in my Simson sideby side shotgun.

It only has a normal bead.

I'm thinking of painting a dot or a thin line centre of rib towards the rear to aid aiming.

Maybe a second small bead half way along later? Some U/O shotguns have this.

Any tips?

I'm trying out slugs in this gun as previously reported.

Midbead, folding leaf sight or peep sight (folding)

You could easily dovetail the rib and mound iron sights, perhaps a thick blade for the front & U or V notch rear.
Or- a wide V filed into an iron sight something like this.
File it down to the correct height and a small 45 degree angle will make a bead in light.

and this: just file it out to a wide V

The dovetails need only be 1/16" deep. A safe sided 30-corner file is used after knotching vertically "almost" the width needed.

Yes of course different sights can be fitted. I'm not looking to do anything elaborate. Maybe a year folding wide Eventually?

Initially I will measure and paint on a small white dot or line to I'd in accurate ai ING or pointing.

Then test the slugs. If they shoot terribly ehhy bother with new sights. Heavy shot, buck shot, BBs will be the limit.

I assume shooting slugs from a side by side, one uses similar techniques to a double rifle. If shooting from a bench, rest the forend hand on a bag, not the gun itself.

I'd try say 25 yards first. Then 50 yards if 25 yards goes well. 75 and 100 yards dream ranges. I don't have a lot of slugs. Give it a try first. Should get early successor failure indications early on.

Yes, forend in hand, hand on bag. No rear bag and sit as high as possible, not crouched down low.
I do my slug testing at 30yards, as that is my perceived absolute maximum range for bear defense.
Even at only 25 or 30 yards, a bear is not a direct enough threat (according to the game branch) to warrant shooting.
The Winchester 3" 1 ounce Fosters @ 1,750fps and the 2 3/4" 1 1/8ounce Gualandi DGS slugs @ 1,610fps both shoot into 2"(5 shots) at 30yards from my Mossy.
