Toilet Paper Makes THE BEST Black Powder
      #382159 - 27/01/24 12:04 AM

making black powder at home outperforming swiss powder ? with toilet paper? its outright funny to watch this guy when testing this stuff

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTV5I8HDX1I

and

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JMtA7No7x0

what a luck he did not try toilet paper in the corona times when it was unobtainable

the factory that makes swiss powder in switzerland had a lot of work to find enough alder buckthorn also known in german as powder tree because this gives the best charcoal to make black powder over centurys.
its unbelievable

Saw that. Interesting stuff. Swiss BP today, is the best as far as power per grain weight is concerned.
Some of the BP Ctg. shooters like 1.5 F over the older GOEX or the newer Schutzen powder out of Germany.
I am currently shooting Schutzen 2F along with Old Enysford(GOEX) 3F in my ML guns.
I use either GOEX 1F, or Swiss 1.5F in my Sharps. It doesn't care which is used & there is very little change in POI.
Not sure on the Federal Laws about making BP(Class A Explosives) here.

and for comparison black powder make with bread charcoal

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utOb3e5zoMo

I had never thought such thing could be possible

nitrox, when there are now two post about this highly interesting video's how to made black powder
why not melt them into one? you can do this and the reader will benefit.

as they say your mind is your weapon, making black powder here was never legal.
and after 9/11 they stopped to sell potassium nitrate to anyone here. I remember it very well, it cost then 12 german mark per kg, buy it to nitrate the paper for making paper cartridges.

daryl, whats sold in north america as " Schützen" is the german Wasag Wano powder https://www.wano.de/en/#Jagd

we call it here most times wasag powder, schützen is a trademark only used in north america. quality seems allways similar to goex powder it seems.
swiss powder is a class of its own. did you ever see the brasilian elephant powder in north america? it was a little bit special because the mixture was different similar to the old german pre war qualitys called nassbrand - wet burning powder beause the residue was a little bit wet.
I think having an old can somewehre with the elephant on it. the factory in brasil explode around 2000 and they never start it again.

I've never had nor observed Elephant powder. The Schutzen powder I have in 2F granulation seems less powerful than GOEX.
Time will tell, but to get good groups even at only 25 yards, I had to increase the load in my 14 bore rifle quite a bit.
Swiss burns at quite a bit higher temperature and seems once a certain pressure is met, it will leave a 'crust' in the bore ahead of the ball.
I have not used it in my ML's, so cannot remark on that "property" by personal experience. The load parameters of those who have remarked this "trait" are unknown to me.
I do know that a friend uses 140gr. Swiss 1 1/2F in his 16 bore with good "normal" results.
My Moose load for my 14 bore rifle, is 165gr. 2F GOEX for 1,550fps. It gives the same accuracy to 200gr. of 2F GOEX at 1,700fps.
I have not chronographed Schutzen powder in any of my rifles.

Alas there is no way to merge threads. I will add a link to this thread to the other thread. I wanted a thread with the YouTube channel name for future reference,

Everything Black Powder
http://forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=382163
https://m.youtube.com/@Everythingblackpowder

Good find of that channel and videos. Very useful.

I attended a Black Powder handgun shoot. Had a go with a Remington BP revolver. The cylinder charging type. Shoots quite accurate and fast, six shots. Had a look and handle of a Colt 1860 BP revolver. Was given a shot with another member's single muzzle loader, looked a lot like a Le Page styled handgun. Also got six shots with BP loaded 1873 Styled Colt .45 Colt. They've got quite a punch. Nice.

Another guy had a horse pistol BP revolver. I forget the model but recognise it. Pretty powerful BP handgun andcweighty.

Good fun. I want one or two now. Will get into it.

I think everyone should have at least a couple black powder guns or muzzle loaders!
I’ve made my own black powder but I screened it rather than corning it. It burned, went whooosh, but I never tried it in a firearm.
On my to do list is to make a good puck press and do it properly next time.
My charcoal was from tree of heaven which is supposed to be a good choice but after watching these videos, I’m thinking that any light weight, high cellulose wood is more or less as good as any other.
It would really all come down to cost. TP isn’t all that cheap as a carbon source.
Another thing that I find interesting is his rather unscientific method of making his charcoal.
The paint can retort is fine but the collective wisdom is that it should be filled as densely as possible - he’s not doing that at all.
Also, too hot is bad - maintaining 650degF is perfect (supposedly).
How that matters and how they came up with all of these parameters, I don’t know. I doubt that making powder by strictly following the “proper” method would produce any better results.
His numbers are impressive for sure!

What's the screening method? Most of what I've seen involves ball milling.

One of the most difficult to find ingredients, I have heard is a good grade of saltpeter.

We used to have easy access for saltpetre from agricultural supply stores. That was decades ago. I forget what it's used for. Preserving?

I wonder how well commercial charcoal for grilling would work? The work already done. I have a nice bag of Argentinian charcoal labelled "carbon". Bought here.

If legal I'd like to make BP for use in small cannon. Commercial BP is expensive and a kg wouldn't last long. I don't have a cannon yet, so non worries Inspector Plod.

I'm not sure what the laws are here. If you can buy blackpowder, does that imply that you can also make it? Even if the constituent individual chemicals are controlled, is it okay if they are made from non-controlled chemicals?

I remember as a kid getting my mom to buy a small jar of potassium nitrate from the chemist for me - the chemist smiled and asked what it was for, and I told her for making gunpowder, and she smiled and completed the transaction. Those were the days. I think I got the gunpowder recipe from our 1950s version Encyclopedia Britannica.

I've no idea of the legality of home making black powder. Seeing we can buy and own BP why should it be illegal?

But we know logic is irrelevant for firearms and ammunition laws.

We know certain.fertilzer is restricted because of "terrorism" fears.

I'd enquire into legal issues before ever serious looking at personal home production. And that would only be for fun and ceremonial cannon use. As I don't have one ...

believe in most european countrys it would be an illegale made of explosive material. here the main ingredient salpetre is restrictet but until 2002 you could buy it free.
it was in the aftermath of the 9/11 terror hysteria that this stops. I bought it before to make nitrated paper for paper cartridges. I would say any material you can use directly to make explosive is now highly restricted in europe so we have seen wannabe terrorist without connections making explosive devices with blackpowder from firework until this is also forbidden one day.

any thick seamless steel tube would give a good cannon barrel, lathe turn a breech end and look for a good welder.
will not look vintage but gives a good muzzle loader canon.

There used to be a cannon shoot on the Sunday morning at the end of every month down at the Belmont Rifle Range here in Brisbane. I've got some rather poor phone video from 17 years ago:

https://youtu.be/9rIyMzYp9bk

https://youtu.be/GYXtRPqJGiI

Since 2020 these shoots have been cancelled due to noise restrictions following complaints from the fhuqking idiot neighbours who bought property next to a rifle range but now don't like the noise.
