Mannlicher-Schonauer 1908 8x56
      #38124 - 25/09/05 10:50 AM

I just joined the board because I just bought a gun I have always wanted. It is Mannlicher-Schonauer 1908 8x56 full stock carbine with a Goertz 2.5x scope in claw mounts. I can't wait to get some ammo and take it to the range. I plan to take it Deer and Pig hunting this fall.

Welcome to the forum, my friend, and welcome to the dizzy heights of Mannlicher Schoenauer carbine ownership! Do you still give your Remchester-toting buddies a wave of acknowledgement in passing?

They have always thought my taste was a little strange. Most of them have been toting Browning BARs and Remington 7400s and I show up with an 1899 Savage in .250-3000 or a Steyr-Mannlicher Professional. Now I will really confound them with the M-S and a Savage 1920! I used to carry the stainless and plastic guns a long time ago but have since seen the light.

Pacecars,

Welcome to the NitroExpress.com forums.

You have a fine looking Mannlicher-Schonauer carbine there, but I am unfamiliar with the 8x56 cartridge.

I think your tastes in rifles and cartridges fit in well here.

Nitro,

Some notes from http://www.chuckhawks.com/8x56mmMannlicher.htm

The 8x56 is based on a conventional rimless, bottleneck case 2.21" (56mm) in length. Its rim diameter is .470" and the rim is .045" thick. The cartridge overall length is 3.04". Bullet diameter is .323" (8mm).

Traditional RWS 8x56 factory loads drove a 200 grain round nose (RN) bullet at a muzzle velocity (MV) of 2170 fps with 2105 ft. lbs. of muzzle energy (ME). The Western and Kynoch factory loads were similar.

I think the 8x56 was basically Mannlicher's commercial competition to the 8x57.

Thanks guys! I have been lurking for a while. I was hunting for a 6.5x54 but couldn't pass this one up. Now if I can just find a .318 Accelerated Express that I can afford I will be a happy man. OK close to happy since I will still need the 6.5, 244 H&H and the list goes on.

I just ordered 100 rounds of ammo so I should be up and shooting in a few weeks.
