DIY Cocking Piece Aperture for my 1910 MS

I had purchased a model 1910 MS in February of this year to finish out my collection of proprietary cartridge rifles. I have done reloading and shooting with the rifle but the factory sights are very difficult to see even in good light.
All my vintage hunting rifles wear aperture sights because that's what I enjoy shooting. As most of you know, original aperture sights don't show up on the market much and usually command a hefty price when they do.
Some time back, I purchased a Parker Hale Sportarget sight that was originally tang mounted for an unknown rifle. I thought that I could easily cut off the mounting tab and silver solder it to an extra firing pin nut that I had. Unfortunately, the barrel of the sight was too tall to use with the Mannlicher and I couldn't figure out a way to shorten it. I put the sight away and decided to keep looking for something that would work.
Recently, a Parker Hale 16 showed up in eBay. I originally thought that I would modify the PH16 for use on the 1910 until a light bulb went off in my head. Fortunately, the barrel of the PH16 was easily swapped over to the Sportarget. I was able to finish the sight this week and I'm happy with how it looks. I also purchased a Skinner brass Partridge-style front sight which I will need to file down to the appropriate height. Thought that I would share this with my fellow NitroExpress members.

I'm not at all knowledgeable on MS's, so your extra firing pin nut holds the new rear sight - so it must be modified to then hold the rear aperture, was it then brazed on?
Is the Sportarget made of brass & if so how do you 'blacken' it?
Wonderfully done indeed mate, well above my skill level!
Looks like it truly belongs there, fantastic work!

The Sportarget is made of steel. I silver soldered it onto the steel firing pin nut. I've had very good success with silver soldering other sights before. I used Mark Lee's Express bluing solution to finish the completed project. Of all the bluing solutions that I've used previously, it is the easiest to use and it gives a beautiful deep black finish. Thanks for the compliment.

Not wrong there fjrdoc - certainly looks the real deal - will certainly have to look into that bluing solution you talked about!

I fully agree, hands down the best, easiest to use, most mistake resistant out there. IMO

A very nice job, fjrdoc! I could not do any better. In fact, it resembles one of mine somewhat. I once started with another P-H peep sight, very similar to the one you used. I modified it by cutting off unneeded metal and silver brazed it on the striker nut of my M1925 M-S in 8x60S.

Thanks kuduae. I had read your previous post on cocking piece apertures. Based on your post, I purchased a used PH16 to use on my rifle. Fortunately, I was able to use the PH16 "barrel" on my Sportarget. You did a lot of metal modification to make the 16 work on your rifle.
The wood on that George Gibbs 1903 is beautiful! My 1893 Steyr by George Gibbs has a bolt release aperture that looks like a precursor to the Lyman 36.
