I think, with the right bullets in the right area, a 6.3X62 or 6.3x64 could do it all.
Baring that, a .375 would suffice.
Stopping guns, no, but hunting guns extraordinaire - for someone who can shoot, of course.

Me thinks you have fat thumbs for typing, like me, or have had a glass too many of the good drop. Would it be 9.3 not 6.3

That would change a lot because I first thought about what cartridges it was meant. The use of cartridges in the caliber class .243 to 6.5mm is rather limited for hunting in Africa. Things look certainly completely different with the cartridges 9,3x62 and 9,3x64, especially the latter.

I am a fan of the cartridge 9,3x64 Brenneke. I currently still own a Mannlicher-Schoenauer rifle caliber 9,3x64, but have never used this weapon or the cartridge 9,3x64 in general for hunting in Africa.

LOL - I typed 9.3 - I thought. "Could have been the whisky, might have been the gin, could have been the 3 or 4 six-packs, I don't know, but look at the mess I'm in. My head's like a football, I think I'm gonna die, tell me, me oh me oh my, wasn't THAT a party!"

The last few safaris I took a 9.3x66 (repeat 9.3x66 ) Mauser 98 bolt and a Searcy 500 double. Seemed to cover most bases.

Good thread to reopen. Yes in addition to the good guys on NE today,we need some of these and others over the last 23 years or so to return and join in again. Gentlemen, forget ffffing faecesbook.

OK, I'll chime in.

Plains game only. Three trips to South Africa. Hunting in the bushveld in the northern Limpopo Province.

2000
.375 H&H, 300 gr Hornady round nose bullet (Ruger M77 Magnum rifle)

2002
.30-06, 220 gr Woodleigh round nose (Ruger M77 MkII rifle)

2005
8x57JS, 220 gr Woodleigh round nose (Remington 700 Classic rifle)
9.3x62, 286 gr Woodleigh round nose (CZ 550 American rifle)
I primarily used the 9.3x62 rifle. I did take a couple of Impala and a couple of Warthogs with the 8x57.

Admittedly based on this small sample size, the 9.3x62 quickly became my favorite.

All loads were handloads. Why did I use heavy, round nose bullets in all of the loads? I just wanted to do it the old fashioned way. I was VERY happy with the performance of the Woodleigh bullets.

Cheers! Bob F.

Good to see you again Bob! It's been a while I think?

Btw I pulled out my Osa Johnson DVD "I married Adventure" last week to watch. Had it for years, never watched it yet

I'm talking to a PH in South Africa tonight actually, so this is timely!

I'm left handed and I don't have 20K to drop on a Ralf Martini custom GMA left hand Mauser, although I would dearly love to. So my cartridge selection is driven by a combination of price, desire, how classical it is for Africa, etc. What I'm taking is:

1. 300 H&H for PG in a re-barreled CRF Win M70 Safari Express; and
2. 416 Rigby for DG in a Ruger No 1 Tropical
