Has this H&H been rebarreled?
      #379620 - 26/09/23 02:23 AM

Found this H&H that is supposed to be a .38 cal straight walled cartridge double rifle. To me the barrels look to small at the breach end. They are way smaller diameter than the fences.

Unfortunately it looks like this.

It's a shame, otherwise it looks like a nice weapon.

Odd that the firing pins would still be centered give what looks like a big drop in the axis of the barrels. Do you have additional pictures?

Weird that the barrels were renumbered to the action if rebarreled. Either way it just looks a bit awkward. I’d avoid if for no other reason than a lack of curb appeal. If I were serious about bidding, I’d ask the auction house for pics of the action flats, breach face and barrel flats, plus the breach end of the barrels.

If the firing pins are in the centre of the standing "breech", then it's a cob-job, imho.

The fences don't look awfully strong so maybe for a low powered 38cal rimfire cartridge (38 Extra Long, Long and Short) where the centred pins in the standing breach would be offset to the chambers to suit a rimfire?

They (at the middle of the breech) don't appear to be quite high enough for a rimfire, to me. Good suggestion, though.

The gun in question looks to be one of H&H early hammerless guns, and judging by the fences would have been made as a shotgun.

I suspect at some point in the last 140 odd years the original barrels became damaged / worn out and it was just an old gun.

So somebody rebarreled it.

This is the sort of gun that generally obtained for not a lot of money as it is far from original, yet can still give a smile on your face. Guide price - I would have a look in the auctions for forend and action only.

If the action is sound and unmessed, this might be a candidate for a new set of barrels. It will cost several thousand in whatever currency, probably five figure of thousands. Done properly you could have a lovely gun at a fraction of the price of an unmessed H&H. Done wrong it would be an expensive money pit.

if this is realy the same model?

the safety here look factory made

with the H&H address on the barrel there is a great temptation to make the gun more interesting for the market in 2023 by changing the caliber. here is a what was probably a rook rifle back in the day for an obsolete caliber. with a 22 hornet liner and a modern scope you get much more interest.

Appears so. In Europe, the Hornet is loaded to less vel. than in NA. I suppose it produces less pressure as well.

It's suppose to be chambered for a .38 caliber straight wall case.

There was a .380 Rook cartridge, also called the .38 Long.
