9,3x62 Rifle by Meffert/Suhl for R. Müller Cape Town SA
      #379421 - 18/09/23 04:38 AM

Gentlemen,

yesterday I visited a master gunsmith and he presented from his collection a rare specimen of a
tropical Mauser hunting rifle (based on a Mauser 98 system).

details for this specimen:

- manufactured by Meffert / Suhl
- the octagonal barrel is marked on the top flat with Imman Meffert / Suhl
- left and right side flats are marked with "R. Müller Cape Town" and "Sole Agent for South Africa"
these markings are inlays in genuine silver
- barrel length: 73cm / approx. 69"

- barrel has B and U proof stamp with crown (Mauser proof?) with additional marking "Krupp Laufstahl"
- the barrel and system are marked with two different serial numbers : 600xx (seems original) and an additional number in another writing style: 440 1xx

- on the barrel is a large block soldered which carries one standing and several folding rear sight blades
- the foldable rear sight blades are marked with 200/300/400 and 600 (meters)
- the last blade is mounted on a ladder type frame, marked with "700"
- all sight blades have silver inlays in triangle form, the top of the triangle is the u-notch where the picture of the front sight will be aligned

- the trigger is a single stage trigger without creep and releases the firing pin with very little movement

The rifle is in untouched condition (I would rate it as 1- ) and has only minor handling scratches. judging the bolt face it was fired , but rarely. Bore is in very good condition.

There was/is no scope or scope bases mounted, the system has minor embellishments (lines and dots).

This gun seems to be a "basic" hunting rifle, but the long octagonal barrel, the stock-to-metal fitting, the rear sight block with five different sight blades with silver inlays all indicate that the customer wanted to be well prepared for savanna hunting opportunities.

It would be very nice if anybody can share information or provide thoughts on the details of this rifle! (and maybe price suggestions, I intend to buy it...but currently there is no price tag)

I have made some photos, but I am unable to provide these in this forum.
However, if anybody is interested, I can send photos by e-mail.

best regards
Rolf

sounds like a typical "Boer rifle"

a maybe very similar rifle was once in one issue of hatary times, iirc also Meffert - Müller.
I remember this because it was a 11,2x60 Schüler, a cartridge allways have a special interest.

Curious about the single stage trigger. Up and down play of the bolt sleeve and cocking piece on a Mauser allows for settling or rising of the sear engagement. Anyone know how such a SS trigger is set up to avoid this? Is there a spring applying upward pressure on the rear of the bolt to provide for the same engagement each time? Something else?

a common way of getting round this is to build up the bolt sleeve where it contacts the rails of the receiver so as to remove this play you mention. This gives repeatable sear/cocking piece engagement
