Seal hunting at Finnish gulf
      #376708 - 14/05/23 10:37 PM

Yesterday morning me and my old friend took his boat and Tikka .308 rifle and drove to see if there would be any seal at the outermost rock of that coastal area. And there really was ! At first when we still were quite far away we saw one very light grey seal on the skerry. When gettin nearer we noticed that it was very huge grey seal, probably weight 300 kg. It desappered very fast but there was two smaller ones too who were very curious and staying near the rock diving and coming up again. At first my friend tried to shoot on boat but despite allmost calm water it doesn´t work. So then we drove to skerry. First I jumped there with boats painter and then my friend with rifle. When the seal next time comes up he immediately shot and bingo! It hits ! Seal stays floating so we jumped very fast back to boat and then going to fetch it. When reaching as much I could I got a grip of seals fore swim fin but it was so heavy that I just can´t alone lift it up. So my friend helped me and with two mens strenght it finaly arose in boat. It was quite small, weight approx. 60 kg. Then we drove back to harbour and I skinned the animal. Now I have one not-so-good-quality raw seal skin and some kilos of seals fat. It´s very good raw material for making leather grease. The only thing which be missing are photos.

Glad that you had a successful hunt. You would have had a hard time handling the huge seal if you shot it. How do you process the meat?

Actually, seal meat doesn´t taste so good so it very common to take just the skin and fat.

Interesting, hunting seals. We'd be drawn and quartered here for shooting a precious seal,

Alas no photos. Would be quite different for us.

Iggorrock, I'm glad you posted. I was wondering if you still had troubles getting onto the forums?

Thanks for the response. I never heard of anybody eating seal meat. Now I know why. More for the sharks to eat.

I do not normaly take any photos of animal whose I have shot and my friend has the same attitude. This seal is Halichoerus grypus, exact said Halichoerus grypus macrorhynchus. We have here Pusa hispida too.

this is the grey seal, Kegelrobbe, gråsäl , halli or harmaahylje

and now I understand your estimate of 200 kg for the first one. the bulls can have up to 300kg what make them the biggest european carnivore before the european brown bear.
Pusa hispida is the ringed seal, Ringelrobbe, vikare or norppa.

I think on your nordic cost it replace the common or harbor seal

we have here in the south. never eat seal meat before but think it could be similar to whale meat I had from norway in the past regularly.
the eskimos never complain about it.

Yes, the seal my friend shot is grey seal. In finnis it´s called Harmaahylje or more familiar Halli. We have Norppa too. Most of them are at sea area but our biggest lake Saimaa has own population too. We do not shoot them.

Igorrock,
Interesting infiormation about seal meat. Does seal meat taste fishy? I would assume that it does because they eat shellfish and other fish. Like everythingh, seal meat may be an "acquired taste" and that the Eskimos are used to eating fishy meat.

Yes it does. I just read that there is some methods whose minimize that taste. Maybe next time (if it ever comes) I have to test them. Many years ago my other friend shot a big beaver and then my old pal gave me a recipe how to prepare beavers meat before making food. It worked well but meat need big amount of added fat because nobody could eat beavers own.

Years ago, people used to shoot coots (pouldeau - sea chicken) which taste fishy. They soaked the meat in either milk or salt water for 24 hours, washed the meat, and then cooked it. Apparently the soaking helped nutraalize the fishy taste.

I have never eaten beaver but the mountain men ate beaver. I thought beaver had a fatty meat similar to raccoon and opossum (both considered to eb poor man's pork).

we had the norwegian whale meat allwas for two day in a mix of milk and red wine.
this take the strong "sea flavour" out that anything coming from the sea had in the meat,

I used to soak cotton-tail bunny and squirrel meat in milk overnight. This removed all gamey taste and made them delectable.
I've eaten beaver ribs roasted against an open fire - delicious, as well as beaver stew cooked up by the camp chef at a fishing camp I guided back in the 70's.
We told the 'fishermen' it was caribou stew. That evening one found a beaver foot beside the steam running past the camp & presented it at the next meal, asking 'does that foot have anything to do with the caribou stew we had last night"? LOL Guilty!!!

Beaver meat is a component of several dishes served at a couple of places in Tierra del Fuego, where beavers are now feral following failed attempts to farm them for fur.

Took a bit of effort to run that down at the time
but tasted just fine to me.

Wow, we may have started a seal eating trend in Finnland with seal soaked overnight in milk and red wine.

The method we used with beaver (old one, weight 20 kg) goes as follows: first meat submerged 24 hours in vinegar-water-salt solution. Then, next 24 hours in marinade which in our case was red wine and carlic. It makes old beaver meat to taste ordinary game meat.

I have eaten norwegian whale meat (they nicknamed it as fjord ox) too and IMO it tastes like something between meat and liver.

Igorrock,
Your method is similar to what my grandmother used to make pouldeau and fish/shellfish eating birds taste great.
I wonder if that could be successfully used for old goats? Has anyon tried marinading old goats?
