Handgun used. I'm guessing he was a bow hunter.

I had the same conclusion about him likely being a bowhunter, but then how was he operating his phone and carrying his bow as well?
Cats are tough animals - I know that from using a .22 LR on feral house cats. SA was necessary for runners.

Around here this is actually not all that uncommon. Sometimes the hunter or hiker knows they are being stalked, sometimes they just find tracks following theirs. The latter has happened to me w/ wolves in my ski tracks.

I know a number of fellows who have had mt lion interactions similar to the above. One is a dear old friend of mine who was a real estate agent who heard a "PLOP!" in the snow behind him as he was checking some property one day. As he turned slowly around he drew his Smith and Wesson 28-2 .357 Magnum "Highway Patrolman" and had the gun up when he made the full turn and there was a lion crouching in the snow facing him. He planted one shot in its face and the thing blew up off the ground, took off running thru the snow spraying blood all over as it ran.

Years ago I told him not to sell that wheelgun before giving me first option to buy. One day I found a box marked "Dirty Laundry" on my front steps, opened it up and...there it was... No charge.

Rod- small grips on an N frame, interesting. I had a model 28 back in the 70's - nice wheel gun.
I would have been planting the shot into his face as well, whether a handgun (unlikely) or a rifle.

Yes - quite possibly, but with a slightly low hit(most likely was), probably not. Probably low enough to enter the throat(via nose) and cut the major arteries.
Had it drilled through his forehead, he'd have dropped like the main switch was turned off.

it disappeared in the forest. not sure the precise placement. certainly not a brain shot. he didn't stick around or go tracking it to find out as all he had w/ him was the .357.

could have just shot its jaw off. i once shot a wounded whitetail doe in the head. the 140 privi sift point shattered its teeth and lodged in the back of the throat. never made it to the back of the head/spine.
