Ok, here is a hornets nest. What do you think of the cartridge? I have very little knowledge of the round. I have one opinion given to me that it is worthless.

Thanks,

Aleko

Well if you were getting a pair bolt acthions from Holland and Holland would you prefer a 300 H&H and 400 H&H or a 300 H&H and 416 Remington.

I think the same goes for a pair of high end custom rifles on Mauser actions.

As a stand alone rifle that was an average gun a 416 Remington would be much better because of components.

The 416 Remington would also develop the same velocities at a bit lower pressure because the case would be slightly bigger than the 400 H&H and of course the slightly larger bore.

If the 400 H&H had been done as a 416 bore it would have been a great cast or paper patch calibre with that extremely long neck. And with the belt case headspace would not increase with each shot if squib loads were being used.

Mike, I take your post that the .400H&H has a .403 to .410" or thereabouts, groove dia.
: There are quite a few moulds in this area as both are either Black Powder and/or custom rifle diameters.
: Unless, of course, I'm missing something, as in the exact size.(if it's under .400?)

Daryl

I was main thinking in terms of Hornady gas checks.

I think the 400 is either 409 or 411 so they might be OK and if 411 I think some pistol bullets around that area.

I believe it is a .408" diameter bullet, it would make sense since I believe Woodleigh supplies the bullets loaded in the factory amunition. What is .408" in metric 10,3mm? I agree that the .416 is a better round. I noticed in the drawings it has a sloped shoulder like the .375 H&H, would that reduce the powder capacity? The ballistic charts state 2375? In a conversation prior to the post that is a very high pressure load. I just wonder if it is anymore effective than the .375?

It is quite different to the 375 H&H shoulder. More like 300 H&H or 404 Jeffery.

Where it is similar to the 404 Jeffery is the body of the case is very straight sided.

In my opinion you get a 400 H&H because of the rifle you are getting or a matched pair such as 300 and 400 H&H.

For example, if I was getting a top end custom rifle on something like the H&W action I would get 400 H&H and not the 416 Remington.

With considerable respect for H&H, we needed their 40H&H about as much as we need another 30 cal short, fat magnum. The 416 Remington will do just fine. I'll bet it vanishes faster than the 8mm Rem Mag.

I bet the .400 H&H Mag lasts longer than the .416 Rem Mag!

Why?

Because only if they make them and at their prices they will remain profitable no matter how many they make per year.

Personally I prefer the older more sloping designs as I prefer easier extraction and perhaps lower pressures over squeezing the last few fps out of the case.

I am curious to see the pressures of the round. I think the .416 is here to stay, but the .400H&H has some attractive features, I like the sloping shoulder too

So how close is the .400H&H to the .400 Pondoro discussed in the A square manual? The Pondoro has a .409" bore and propells a 400grs bullet out of a 26" barrel at about 2350 with about 53,000 CUP pressure. The .375 H&H is about 53,000 CUP with a 300 grs bullet. Could you shoot .410 pistol bullets out of the .400 H&H?

IIRC the 400 H&H is a .411 diameter bullet.....just the same it's never going to be popular if it has to contend with the 416 Remington or even the 416 Taylor. Bullet selection strongly favors the 416 diameters.

From what I've heard of ammo costs the H&H offering will only have a chance of being as popular as the .300 and .375 when it's commercially produced my the majors and chambered in the M-70 and other popular makes.

I'd love a trio of 300, 375 and 400.....but it's just not in the cards now.

I looked at it seriously before building the 404 Jeffy.....
Mybe someday....but not now
