I Think I Caught Mauser Fever- Bought another Commercial 757

I Think I Have Caught Mauser Fever - I Just Bought Another Commercial in 7x57 cal.

Hello All,

I bought this yesterday at auction. In a week or two I'll discover what I have. Looks like no exterior markings, but then who knows. This was too reasonably priced to pass it by.

Good looking "Hunter". You should use it as one, some day.

Tunnel mounts Buckstix - just in case the scope fogs up at the wrong time!
I agree with Daryl - its a good hunting rifle & calibre to boot.
Nice pick up mate, hope she shoots well

I really like that style rifle. It is VERY similar to my model 70 and my 9.3x62, when I had all it's parts together. It had those side panels, but only a single trigger.

Hello All,

The rifle finally arrived. I added updated pictures to the original post above. Could anyone please help with the proof marks? These are totally foreign to me and different than typically seen on other rifles. The serial number stamped on the bottom of the action is "10001". There is a number "1" on the bottom of the barrel ahead of the receiver, and also a number "1" on the bottom of the bolt handle. The metal butt plate has a Banner Mauser logo. By the way, the caliber is 8x57 .. not 7x57 as was listed in the auction description. Very disappointing. I wanted a 7x57 sporter, not an 8x57.

Well, the 8x57 is still an early '06 ballistically, only in .323 or .318 cal. Hmmmm
Do you know which?

Buckstix

Welcome to the Mauser fever sufferers group. I have a bad case myself.

I meant to ask you earlier whether you saw (and or bought) the Leonard Mews .416 Brevex that was sold by Reata Pass Auctions some months ago. It was an interesting piece with birds eye maple stock. I made a bid equal to the selling price but it went to another bidder due to some fine point in the auction rules. Was hoping it might have gone to you.

Cheers

Hello mckinney,
Thanks for the reply.

This is a little off the subject, but I will answer.

Yes, I saw it and I did NOT bid on it. ... I have a dozen Leonard Mews rifles. Leonard was a friend and fellow shooter and member here at our gun club in Appleton, Wisconsin. I'm going to say "in my opinion" to protect myself from any legal action. In my opinion, that rifle was never touched by Leonard, stock or otherwise. Also, if it had been done while he worked at Weatherby, the caliber marking would have been on the left side of the barrel ahead of the receiver, and Roy would never have put Leonard's name and date on the gun. And, if Leonard had done the work on his own as "Custom", it would have had his signature diamond in the grip cap. Although the action was a Weatherby Brevex, it was poorly "refinished". The checkering style on the stock was only "vaguely similar" to Mews, but not really his style at all, and it lacks his "perfection". You are lucky you didn't get it. With the auction house "juice", and shipping and tax, it would have cost you nearly $7,000 for a rifle that's worth only about $4,000 at he most. Nice, but no cigar. I'd bet a bag of donuts that Leonard's stamp is not on the stock. He stamped all his work.

Here's an example of Leonard's "perfection" checkering. And a picture of Leonard. And a picture of his signature stamp.

Hello All,

I updated my original pictures by adding pictures of the inside of the stock and details of the floor-plate.
