The best battle rifle returns, the SLR
      #375131 - 15/03/23 01:59 AM

SLR due to return to the British Army!!!

After 35 years out of circulation, the famous Self Loading Rifle is due to return to service for British Army Troops.

The SLR-A2, a 7.62mm weapon, will feature a modernised rail system and extended 30-round magazine.

This change comes after years of continuous failings of the Army’s current weapon system, the SA80, which was found to be much less powerful.

“We had a major issue with stopping power with the SA80” said Lt Gen Ian Wallace, Deputy Director of Defense Armaments, “The weapons system was simply not powerful enough to put down the enemy. With the new SLR-A2, you can guarantee that it will not fail with that task.”

While there is no current date announced for its integration, the news of the SLR’s return has been met with approval by both serving soldiers and veterans alike.

“It’s good to have a real man’s weapon back in the army” said Gary Lavelle, 64, formerly of the Light Infantry.

Some questions have been raised by critics lf the weapon system, with claims that the current generation of soldiers may struggle with the recoil from a larger calibre.

The 7.62x51 was always a GREAT mil. ctg., a little bit faster than the WW11 '06.
Our ICI ammo was loaded with a 147gr. BT, same vel. I suspect.
Nato Ammo 150gr. @ 2,820fps.

Yes the FAL but known in UK, Aust, NZ, and I think Canada as the SLR.

What I now find a more than a little amusing is that back in the early 80's I pointed out all the pitfalls of the 5.56 to our Director of Infantry. Needless to say, he disagreed although there was evidence then to back up what I was saying. Now there is way more evidence to back this up.

I think it is the correct move. The extremely high pressure 270 (6.8mm) cal the US is going to is just asking for problems. Not because of bore size but construction of the ammunition especially if the west end uop in a shooting match with China.

The SMLE 303 bolt action is the best ever battle rifle of all time, the SLR is perhaps the best semi-auto battle rifle.

“We had a major issue with stopping power with the SA80” said Lt Gen Ian Wallace, Deputy Director of Defense Armaments, “The weapons system was simply not powerful enough to put down the enemy. With the new SLR-A2, you can guarantee that it will not fail with that task.”

Well who would have thought. There were plenty of warnings given back then when the 5.56 was adopted that it would fail, it did and it's been a failure ever since.

Even with the tumbling bullets in Viet Nam, it was not as good as a .30 cal. imho, as I do not have direct experience in that war.

No idea. Would make sense as the UK today couldn't pick a decent battle rifle.

Yeah. The furphy works because we all know it would have been a good move. A compact SLR, with an optic sight and/or thermal etc would be the Bee's knees. Couldn't happen in Oz. Another piece of Howard stupidity was having the existing stock of SLRs destroyed rather than stored. Even destroyed the machinery and data packs at Lithgow so they could never be made again or even maintained.

Howard was and is a Traitor in my opinion. This outlook of mine is based on what he did to this country's ability to defend itself and be self sufficient.

Nitrox if the above is likely to cause you trouble then delete it.

Howard as a traitor. Spot on. All of them. Whitlam, Frazer, Hawke, Keating, Howard, Rudd, Gillard, especially Turnbull, little Mal Morrison and now Albinese.

Abbott might have been the only decent one? Though anti gun. I never liked him, but he refused the NWO agenda and so was got rid of.

Unfortunately it's true.

I think held offhand in fully auto fire the L2A1 would be hard to fire. A 2 to 3 round burst at a time only. Recoil would drive it off. Using a bipod and a rest it would work well like an old Bren.

If we were allowed Semi autos, an SLR would be my zombie apocalypse survival end of the world rifle.

I'm partial to old wooden furniture but one of these would be cool too.

I do like. But an - oops 20 - round magazine on a full auto 8x57 ?

He does seem to be able to control the FG42 well in full auto.

Amazing rifle. If it had been in wife spread issue with troops who could use it, it could have been a war winner.

the FAL, what was full auto outside of the british influence had also a 20 rounds magazine, like G3 , M 14
30 rounds magazin in 308 makes an impressive weight

look at the M 14 in full auto https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VAABMvmaGWQ

That looked like it was fairly controllable compared to some of the others. The full auto SLR use to climb were as the M14 dose down/sideways. The Bren was very controllable in full auto. Mind you it was much heavier too.

Best battle rifle of all time to me is the AK47 (limited accurate range though), the Israeli Galiel, the SLR (those modified with the sand groves on the locking block) the M14. These above the SMLE simply because of fire power they can put down and these are almost as reliable as the SMLE. Just my 2 cents worth.
