A 9.3x64 semi auto rifle!

Dragunov SVDK sniper Rifle in 9.3x64mm Brenneke

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=l-YjVirL19U

https://en.topwar.ru/23190-krupnokalibernaya-vintovka-svdk.html

A little-known variant of the famous Dragunov SVD marksman rifle.

From the 1990s onwards there was a trend for NATO militaries to replace their 7.62x51 NATO sniper rifles with ones chambered in larger calibers like .300 Win Magnum and .338 Lapua Magnum, which delivered superior range and penetration.

Russia was a late convert to this trend, but in the early 2000s they experimented with creating their own high-powered sniper cartridge. They used the 9.3x64 Brenneke, a popular hunting caliber in Europe, as the base and created a new semi-armour piercing sniper round called the 9SN, with a 256gr FMJBT bullet having a heat-treated steel tip.

Although effective range was similar to that of the 7.62x54R round previously used by the Russian snipers and marksmen, it had the ability to penetrate soft body armour and light environmental barriers up to 600m.

In the end the new cartridge and rifle weren't adopted, presumably because compared to, say, .300 Win Mag, it didn't provide enough of a performance improvement over the standard 7.62mm.

Hmm - not running the 9.3x64 very warmly. 5000joules is only 3,688fpe,
as the article says, barely more than the .300 Win. Mag.

My thinking as well. I wonder if that is because the rifle could not handle the higher pressures consitantly.

Could be. My CIP chart lists the 9.3x64 as a 64,000PSI & 54,000 CUP ctg. = the same actual pressure - in this case.
The 7.62x54 is a 57,000 PSI (CIP) round, same as the various 57mm cases and 9.3x62mm.
I find this program and text very handy.

The Russian steel cased version of the 9.3x64 as made by the Barnaul company is an emasculated, loaded down version of the Brenneke cartridge. While German RWS offers these loads:
184 gr unleaded “Evolution Green” bullet at 3281 fps and a 293 Uni Classic bullet at 2510 fps,
Barnaul lists just a 268 gr softpoint at 2287 fps,
https://www.barnaulpatron.ru/en/catalog/patrony-dlya-nareznogo-oruzhiya/9-3x64/
Those are barely 9.3x62 ballistics. Some members achieve his with a hot loaded 9.3x57. The Russian Dragunov self loading rifle is probably designed to take such a load only, not the original German full power loads.

Pressure 55,114psi listed. However, I do not believe that ctg. develops THAT pressure with the load listed.
Likely the pressure listed is maximum for the case in that rifle, not what the load mentioned actually produces.
I could "see" the 293gr. at 2,510fps, would or could produce that amount of pressure, though.
The other loads, nadda.

I've chronographed the 293 TUG RWS factory 9.3x64mm loads, in my rifle at 2610fps average, with less the 10 fps variation.
Mind that my rifle has a 26" barrel, so as to what length barrels the folks at RWS run their loads thru is another matter which could vary the velocity somewhat, even their old catalogue stated 2570fps which I have got in my rifle only with 72gn AR2209 & standard Federal 210 primers.

Spot on as always kuduae - a very much emasculated load for Herr Brenneke's cartridge!

I have read again, but I cannot find any particular recommendation as far as ammunition is concerned when using the civilian version of the SVD, the model TIGR from IZHMASH.

The Russians don’t offer a TIGR rifle in 9.3x64 for export. They are offered in 7.62x54R and .308 only.
https://bx.kalashnikovgroup.ru/upload/uf/b85/Civilian%20products%20Kalashnikov.pdf
As Russia is not a CIP member, they are free to “proof” their guns for any load they want, if those guns are sold on their domestic market only. In Russia the weak Barnaul loads are available only. If they exported their 9.3x64 rifles to any European country, the guns would have to be proofed for the full power, high pressure RWS loads. The 9.3x64 TIGR rifles will probably not blow up,but will soon beat themselves to death if used with full power German loads.
Barnaul lists the pressure of their 9.3x64 load at 3800 bar. That’s less than the CIP maximum working pressure of the old 7x57 Mauser, 3900 bar. The German 9.3x64 Brenneke loads are 4400 bar max.

Maybe not nowadays, but about 20 years ago it was not a problem to buy one.

Those pressures are the same ball park as to what I found listed in PSI & posted above.
