I know that high condition is important, but surely something is amiss with this Morphy's listing?

With the 26% commission the opening bid would be more than 5K USD.

Blued short stroke action with 5 shot detachable magazine and plain single trigger. Checkered walnut round knob pistol grip stock with forward finger groove and Mauser hard rubber buttplate. Stock has German silver vanity plate marked "DIR./HB". CONDITION: 95% original blue with light edge wear. 95% original varnish with light handling marks. Good bore and mechanics.

Kuduae will probably chime in on this one, explain its history, probably a very rare gun for all we know!

As you ask: A run of the mill Mauser Ms 420 Target/Sporter, 2nd series. Probably made 1929 – early 1930. BTW, “459” was the old gauge number for .22 barrels, out of use elsewhere since 1912. For reasons unknown Mauser marked these gauge numbers on their barrels until WW2. The polish and blueing of the metal parts looks too good to be true, as does the wood. The buttstock lacks the usual stamped round Mauser mark. Imho the rifle was completely refinished. Asking price and estimate are simply out of the stratosphere. The rifle would still be grossly overpriced if you cut a 0 from the numbers.

I agree that cutting a 0 from the number would bring it into line for Canada. Few years back, I picked up a BRNO SA .22 LR from a friend. Seems to me, I paid just over $400.00 for it. It is indeed in beautiful, original condition, but likely only dates to the 1950's.
All totaled, I have more than that in my 10/22 with stock, trigger guts and new barrel when you consider the retail on the rifle to start with. LOL

I see that the model 420 is overpriced definitely. It is the model 410 which is worth at least twice that!

There is a Mauser Es 340, the single shot version of essentially the same rifle, condition about halfway to Nitox‘s Mm 410, on auction at egun. With two days to go, offers are up to Euro 2.-:

There is also a 340b in the Morphy’s auction - estimate 2,000 to 3,000 USD! Something clearly wrong and I don’t think it’s a misplacing of the decimal point.

I do love these prewar Mauser .22’s and have several. The MM 410B, MS 350B, and MS 420B are great rifles and seem to get all the collector interest, but my personal favorite is the little MM 410 (without the B). Very hard to find these in any condition, but what a sweet little rifle.

This Es340 just sold for Euro 25.50 + 35.00 S&H here in Germany. Regarded as just an old .22.

As it would be here, too. I suspect very close to $100.00- maybe $75.00 - just because it's old and in fair shape.
