An improoved “Heeren” rifle by the Ern family
      #374112 - 15/02/23 12:11 AM

tinker on the “A one off?” thread:
Quote:

Max Ern of Leverkusen, Germany and his family are making some of the finest hunting rifles on the planet

A new example of the Ern family gunmaking art: A 2-barrel take down rifle on Ern’s own improved Heeren type action in 8x68S and 7x65R, interchangeable. All done inhouse by the Ern family. Design, machining, barrel rifling, case hardening , stocking and so on by Max Ern Sr. and Max Ern Jr., engraving by Evelyn Ern. The Erns redesigned the basic Heeren action by slightly beefing it up to take high pressure loads up to .338 Lapua Magnum, including nearly all the big British NE cartridges. The shape was altered slightly to allow for a decent pistol grip stock. The lockwork is redesigned too to go on full cock on closing, obviating the need to “set” the trigger for each shot. Instead of the set trigger feature, it is a crisp single stage trigger now. The quarter ribs are the bases for Ern’s proprietary claw mounts.

That is an interesting rifle/action. Very nicely built. Lovely stock colours - so nice and VERY fine checkering.

I've met the family, and I've handled this model of rifle, among others that they offer

This is absolute top-shelf design and craftsmanship

How does it work? What opens and how to chamber a round?

Oops, I thought everyone here knows the Heeren action. It’s a falling block single shot like the A.Henry or the Farquarson. To open, you put your thumb into the triggerguard, unlatch it and pull the front end down to lower the breechblock. This ejects a spent case and recocks the action. Insert a cartridge into the chamber and lift up the triggerguard to close the action. Ready to go. The advantage of the Heeren design over other falling block actions: It is the shortest of all such actions. The breech end of the barrel is directly over the trigger. So a Heeren rifle with a 26” barrel and a 14” pull is just 40" over all, as short as a Mannlicher – Schoenauer Stutzen with an 20” barrel. Btw, the rear "trigger" is a tail of the hammer. this allows for uncocking and recocking the loaded rifle. put your thunb behind the "triggers" and release the hammer by pulling the front trigger with your index finger. Slowly let the hammer tail back, just as you would uncock a hammer gun.

A very interesting action kuduae!
Thanks for explaining its workings - rather neat to de-cock your action & put away.
Fantastic work, beautiful selection of timber & masterful engraving to say the least.
No wonder Tinker was impressed!
WOW!

I really like the subtle colours of the colour cased action & trigger guard.

I have the great privilege of knowing Max and Evelyn ERN and their son very well.
We have exchanged a lot during our meetings and we share many ideas about continental gunsmithing.
For my part, I consider that Max ERN is currently, and by far, the best gunsmith I know and I don't see anyone who can compete with his genius, his quality requirements and his modesty.
It is an honor for me to have benefited from his advice.

That cocking/uncocking feature is not merely for storing the rifle with the mainspring released. Instead, it is the original “safety” of that action. You may load the rifle, uncock the lock as described and carry the loaded gun without any danger. Just pushing that cocking lever forward cocks the rifle for a shot.
The basic Heeren action, as shown in the drawings above, was invented by Count Arturo Heeren together with the Nagel & Menz gunshop in Baden – Baden and patented in 1880. As the patent was held by N&M, all Heeren action rifles were sold and signed by Nagel & Menz until the patent expired. But N&M never made the actions. Instead, they had them made by Stephan Heym Jr., Suhl. Until WW2 all these actions were made in Suhl by Stephan and son Max Heym, later by Ernst Kerner & Co., Suhl. Postwar several Swiss, Austrian and German gunmakers made such actions. Just as “Farquarson” is often used for any hammerless falling block action by English speakers, Germans are apt to call any such action a “Heeren”.

I remember seeing pictures of these rifles (actions) back in the 60's.
I don't remember where, but likely a Gun Digest, John
T. Amber, editor.

Although I have only met the family a few times, I completely agree with this assessment

The son who is working in the workshop with mother and father is very bright and highly skilled in the craft, no doubt the family name will continue to produce fine guns for more generations

The family is generous with information and they don't pretend to be practicing voodoo

Their guns are top shelf equipment, and the schedule and price make for some great opportunities
