1912 Savage .22 autoloader

I bought this little 22 autoloader sometime ago. Wondering if anyone is familiar with these rifles and whether this one might have come from the factory (in 1912 or so) threaded for a suppressor - maybe as a gallery gun? Is there any kind of 'period' suppressor that would be correct for the gun? I haven't been able to find much at all online.

WOW - way ahead of it's time, SA let alone with a threaded muzzle AND an interrupted thread for quick on/off. I was not aware of suppressors in that time line.

Perhaps a later modification?

Might not that collar be adding the barrel muzzle thread?

So early for a semi auto. And a .22, not a military rifle.

McKinney, how does it shoot?

Homer is a modern suppressor expert. Maybe he knows what early suppressors looked like? I'm guessing what they looked like in my mind. Will look for an image.

Interrupted thread is cool. Makes putting one one quick and easy. Poachers rifle?

mckinney you have a nifty little piece of history there!
I'd say just a straight blow back, but the first glimpse I got of it I thought M1 carbine with a Winchester '92 buttstock!

The action design is quite similar to the model 1910 Winchester autoloaders in .351 and .401. I had forgotten about them.

I did some more determined research on early silencers and got lucky right away with this piece on Maxim silencers:

Apparently these silencers were patented in 1909 and offered by mail order houses through 1934. Then the government imposed a $200 stamp duty. This killed sales as no one was willing or able pay a $200 tax to silence a $15 rifle, particularly in the Great Depression.

The coupling for these silencers appears to be the same as the one mounted on my 1912. See the drawing at the top of page 2 of the sales brochure.

Unfortunately it is illegal today to possess a Maxim silencer unless it was registered with ATF (or its predecessor) when originally acquired. You can not buy an old one and register it. Therefore the only hope is to find one that comes with registration paperwork and the original $200 stamp. There are probably some out there, but it must be one of the rarest accessories to find.

Haven't shot it yet, which is a good thing because I just learned today that it's not designed for high speed 22LR ammo. I guess it will have to be the 1000 fps target ammo.

Maybe it is twisted (24/26"?) for .22 Long (29gr. short bullet at short vel.)

I have seen two early rifle barrels that were threaded for silencers. One was a Stevens SS rifle & don't remember the other. The owners said that the silencers were not included when they bought the guns.

McKinney, nice, informative video from Forgotten Weapons. Ian does a nuice job of researching vintage weapons anbd accessories.

I had a Browning SA-22, it was my fathers- until John Howard took it away. First sold in 1914. The take down system on that was an Interrupted Thread over the chamber, so 90 degree turn and off/on goes barrel. Seems that idea might have been an innovation of the time for small rifles.

A friend's father had an old Anschutz .22 semi auto. I think it was? If loaded with non high velocity ammo it turned into full auto. A whole magazine each time. The bolt was recoil operated in think but with less power ammo failed to catch on recoil. I'm sure it was crushed in 1996.
