cchunter goes africa - july 14-24
      #3730 - 10/07/03 07:29 AM

Next week it's time for my next Safari. I will be going to the Limpopo Province in South Africa and hunt with proffesional hunter Jasper Coetzee.

Like we did the last time I will also now update this topic from location if the technique works.

My plans are first to hunt with my Winchester Pre 64 mod 70 Safari in cal. 375 were I will try two different bullets. The Rhino Solid Shanks in both 270 and 380 grains. My primary aim is to hunt Eland, Zebra and Blue Wildebeest.

I will also do some bowhunting in the later part of the hunt. If everything works out well I will also have time for another photo session with Nicolette taking pics for the 2004 cchunter calendar.

- Nicolette (calendar girl 2004) and me.

Competition

The trophy guessing competition last time was very appreciated so lets go for another one with the same conditions.

I need your guess in inch for the longest Impala horn that we will have during the hunt. Plese state left or right if anyone will be on the same length.

This time the price will be a hat and a calendar.

Christer, now you're really starting to tick me off! You just got back from a Safari, and I've got to wait for over another year to go.
Seriously though, I'm just jelous. Good luck, but save some critters for the rest of us.
There are some super sized Impala in that region-25 inches plus with a little luck, and, if you don't shoot too soon.
For the contest, I'll say 25 3/4 on the left side.

Christer

Good luck on your hunt. You lucky bugger.

Eland, zebra and blue wildebeest - a nice trio to take. Are you sure a 380 gr .375 will be enough ?

Hope the bowhunting works out well.

Looking forward to seeing more photos from your calendar of the beautiful Nicolette.

Christer
Best of luck. I will be one week behind you in Limpopo Province (also for Blue Wildebeest) after my Buffallo hunt in Zimbabwe. Couldn't resist registering for this forum just to get in on your Impalla lottery. 24 1/2" - LEFT.

OK

Back again after technical problems but not huntichal

Hunted 6 days in South Africa and shot 3 Impalas, 2 Zebras and 1 Stenbock. Couldnt find the Big Eland I was looking for so that has to be for next trip.

I also took a one day trip in to Zimbabve and hunted pigs and took 8 Warthogs and one Bushpig. Also got an offer for a Blue Wildebeest I could not refuse.

Here are three photos so far (arrived two hours ago so havent got my own yet. More will come.

Frederik

What sort of terrain is the best place to find bushpig? Along river bush, or near farmlands?

Hunting methods? - by hide or stalking? Any chance of getting them by day - except by luck, or are most shot by night and spotlight?

Use of dogs? Is this legal for bushpig?

Sorry about all the questions but bushpigs get me all excited. Looking forward to Christer's story.

PS Did you meet up with Christer this trip?

Nitro,

Where you will find bushbuck you will find bushpig as well that is the easiest to tell you where you will find bushpig. Yes you can be lucky and bump into them in daylight but you can use dogs and also baiting them that also works quite well.

Yes Christer came to have breakfast the day he arrived at the restaurant where I worked so I did see him for a while I think he has a photo of me.

OK Thanks. That makes sense. Where I hunted Limpopo Bushbuck last year I was told there were bushpigs around as well nut didn't see any. I think there would have damaged the irrigated crops a lot more so probably were more thinned out.

Also there was reputed to be bushpig along the Shangaani River in Zimbabwe where I saw and later shot my Chobe Bushbuck. Again never sighted any of these elusive hogs.

John and Frederik

Sorry to hear that you haven't got your bushpig yet but maybe that is quitew understandable.....

The secret is hard work, nothing but hard work. Just listen to this.

It took me about 14 hours to get my first one. Wehad dinner in camp about seven in the evening and thereafter we left for Zimbawe. Andrew that we were suppoused to meet at the pub had a lot to do there so first at 12 I managed to lift him and Jasper out to the bakkies so that we could leave for the border. After three hours hard work at the border and 40 km on dirtroad we finally could jump in bed. We went up about 7.30 in the morning and had fresh orange juice from the farm. At nine we left with the bakkie and after 10 minutes there was a Warthog sleeping along the road and before the camcorder was ready the pig had left. We thought he would not go to far so we did follow him in the bush and there was my Bushpig sleeping broadside to me. Jasper told me to shoot and so I did. He ran 40 meters for a heart/lung shot and thats it, Who said hard work did not pay of.....

Lucky Bloody Viking !!! Hard work my arse !

In 2000 I had a texan and showed him the two huge bushpig across the valley not so far a managable shot 280 meters or so. "No I don't want one !"

Can you realize what I felt like here it is the first time I saw them hogs in Daylight and he just passes it up !! That was at 4pm. They were very big in body size I would have loved to have taken one myself but we were after impala in the valley that we saw.
