Blitzen 15 years on the 24th but ...
      #372534 - 22/12/22 10:40 PM

He didn't make it by two days. I had my best mate out down this afternoon. He was coping well at all on hot days, on hot days had trouble walking at all. Normal days had trouble getting up. Often needed help being lifted up. Then staggered as a walk. Did sometimes manage to try to go to the park. I missed taking him today. He followed me to the car but it was too late then. Three days ago refused to drink for a day and eat. Did eatva bit next days days and started drinking well again. Worst hecdevelopedva horriblecwheezing rasping chest. Though it was not all the time. Sometimes slept for hours peacefully.

A week or morecago on a very hot day I almost had him out down the next day. But that day he was much improved. Was a bit of a lost dementia dog that day. Improved but hot weather really hit him.

Decided an ancient 105 year old day by human terms was going to suffer if I waited till after Christmas. Especially if not eating more than mouthfuls. 41°C day forecast next week.

My best mate of the last 25 years. The young fellow of 2 will be extra spoiled.

Sorry to hear John!
My Brother-in-law turns 70 on the 24th, good innings for a dog, always sorely missed when a good one goes.

Sad to hear, really sad to have to do it, but inevitable, sooner or later. Great for Blitzen he had you as a friend for so long.
It is great, you have the puppy.

John,
Sorry to hear you lost your mate. He looks like a great dog and friend. Everytime we have lost one, it is like losing a family member, they become like your children.

No Blitzen this Christmas!

Had to have a little joke ... Watching a Christmas Carols show.

Just visiting my boy on his birthday. I'll have a drink or smoke with him every 24 December.

I hope I've got older boy photos on my phone. By the end he was a grey haired skull face. With the grey eye brows a very permanent quizacle look. I neglected to photograph him the last day. He was very thin, bony and sad looking. Only a week earlier he had good occasional wagging sessions. And was eating well. Not eating drinking and the cough wheezing changed alll that.

Sadly when taking him to the vet he followed me to the car, I think he might have had a quick park walk next door, but alas, I didn't have time. I should have made time. Being a few minutes late to the vets, no big deal.

Will have a smoke with him tonight.

***

Santa does have a very vigorous Donder however.

Buried my old mate last night around midnight next to Siegfried, my earlier GSP from about 16 years ago. Blitzen was getting a little smelly in a closed plastic box, in a cloth dog bag and a plastic liner to keep dry Sometimes on ice. I wanted to bury him on the farm but was away till Christmas Day

The area will be a small garden with a slow growing jacarandah already there. Siegfried's kennel name was "Fire flash" or "Flash fire" so I've always wanted a flamboyant aka a flame tree. Both Flamboyants and Jacarandas are frost intolerant. Have had lots of problems with the Jacaranda. Must finally plant some quick growing "fern" trees as protective cover. They may work? Some bushes and ground covers on the mound. A park bench.

Relief to finally get the old boy in the ground.

Donder will love the added time and attention now I don't have to look after a jolly old invalid fellow
