I once shot a bustard with the cartridge 460 WBY-Magnum and a 500gr SP bullet, full load.

It was just a big hole at the base of the neck, but otherwise nothing of the meat was destroyed.

Thankfully the meat was not damaged.
Are they edible?
There would not be enough resistance for the transfer of any energy to the bird.

I've blown up Columbia Ground Squirrels with my .17AB and .17AH at up to 350yards (nothing but chunks), and with either ctg. on them to 520yards, instant kills with gut shots. The .17Rem will dismantle them a little further out than those small cased wildcats.

As written, just a big hole at the base of the neck and otherwise no destruction. The bird did not jump up either.

I also once shot a warthog in the chest with my rifle caliber 500 Schüler when he jumped over the road, similar to by a driven hunting. The warthog ran about 20m before it fell over dead. With the same cartridge loaded with a 535gr FMJ bullet at 2400 fps, an elephant with heart shot go down on the place days before.

It's all a question of the resistance of the games body. I have shot quite a few small game with big bore rifles and almost always observed the same thing.

Maybe an exception.

I shot this wild boar from a high seat at a relatively short distance with my rifle caliber 460 WBY-Magnum, a full load with a 500gr SP bullet. The boar jumped up and fell dead, but weighed around 130kg, was strongly built and so the working of the bullet.

Some of what I've hunted and shot.

I remember impressing myself one time hitting a dingo with my .375 with a 300 gr RNSP at 220 yards.

The big bore boar hunt here at NE, a striped bush panther (feral cat) head shot with the same.

Lots of feral pigs with the .450, .375 and 9.3x74R. A good number of warthog with the same.

A few bunnies and other hoppers.

I'm not big on using the bigger bores or even medium bores on small game. Rabbits can be practice however.

I'd prefer feral goats, pigs and roos on destruction permits for big bores.

I used my Big Bores to shoot smaller game just because I only had this weapon on hand. These are all game shot as part of big game hunts. Otherwise, I use the more or less suitable weapon and cartridge for each game species.

Same for me. Usually when hunting other game eg buffalo.

Though feral animal and roo culling do give practice options when available.

I shot 34 grouse one fall with my .458 2", using 13gr. AL8 and a .451" Speer Swaged RN meant for the .45 ACP. They shot to the post of the flip-up post in my Bushnel Custom 2 1/2X scope at 25 yards, and into 3" at 100. Head shots, of course.
