Martini Cadet, Ruger No1 vs No3?
      #37179 - 10/09/05 06:19 PM

Been looking for info on the merits or otherwise of the Ruger No 1 action vs the No 3.

A local dealer has a No 3 in .22 hornet at a very good price and I'm wondering whether there is anything particularly to look out for?

From what I've been able to find out, the No 3 is a simplified action, carbine version of the No 1 and was chambered for lighter calibres.

I also know of a custom Martini Cadet based .22 hornet at an even better price.

Seeing as the No 3 is discontinued, is the Ruger No 1 just better all round, very strong albeit a bit of overkill in such a light calibre?

What would you go for, the Martini or the Ruger No 1 or 3?

Cheers

TilleyMan

TilleyMan,

I vote for the Martini cadet. The lock time of the Martini is at least twice as fast as the Ruger action, and it makes a really attractive package on a small caliber.

You haven't given any information on the aesthetics of the Martini, so my vote is only on the action choice.

The No. 3 is the same action internally as the No. 1. The only difference is the lever. The No. 3 had a greatly simplified stock, thus the savings in $$. You can chamber any cartridge on a No. 3 that can be put on a No. 1.

Good luck,

Here is one thing you can do with a ruger #3. It started as a .22 Hornet but is now a .223. It will shoot 3/8 inch groups all day and all night.

Mick,

You can put a .223 on a Martini Cadet too. Just need a rimless extractor, which can be had in several configurations. I had such a beast some years ago.

I would definately go for the Martini. The rimless extractors I have heard are a bit expensive and tricky to set up, but can be done. Rimmed cases are a lot more straight forward. There seem to be a lot in 22 rimfire, 22 Hornet, and 222 Rimmed in this calibre range.
