Another drilling.
      #371355 - 12/11/22 12:16 AM

I am such a sucker for drillings. This one will be ordered this morning. The 9.3 X 72R is one of the few early, German sporting cartridges I have not worked with and it's time to rectify that deficiency.

I do take exception to parts of the description. I believe it's all original and the trigger guard is horn, not plastic.

That’s a true boxlock drilling, not an usual Blitz- = trigger plate locks one. Such Anson = boxloxk drillings are quite rare, as they were more difficult to make than even a sidelock drilling. If you care to look closely, you will notice the underlumps of the barrels and the recesses in the action bar are offset slightly to the left. This was done to provide space for two locks, right shot and rifle, on the right side and one, left shot, on the left while still providing a slim profile. The main advantages of an Anson- over a Blitzdrilling are: The distance from breechface to triggers is about 1” shorter. This makes the gun less muzzle heavy, providing for better balance. The stock is much stronger, as the head of a Blitzdrilling is hollowed out much more to accommodate for the lockwork above the trriggerplate. As such true boxlock drillings were difficult to make and fit, they are even more rare than sidelock drillings. So less than 1% of all drillings are of true Boxlock-/Anson design. When you have it in hand, send photos of a marks under barrels, on watertable and on breechface. Maybe we can identify the Suhl maker?

Just looked at the photos sharps4590
One very nice piece of kit!
If its exactly as Kuduae suggests then its a very rare bird indeed!
Hopefully the horn trigger guard will not be a problem for you, you might have to get a replacement one made up - so what do you then make it out of Horn or steel?

Holy cow, Axel!! I had no idea about all you said. I guess a blind hog does find an acorn once in a while! It should be here next week and I'll get the pictures and info you ask about.

Thanks 9.3, it does sound promising, huh! The trigger guard will be what it is.

krupp stahl drilling is pointless, only meaning that barrels were made from krupp stahl.trigger guard is horn, very unusual it don't have a scope mount.

I knew both...20+ years ago? Long before I ever saw this one. No, it isn't unusual it doesn't have scope bases. They're quite common without bases and from what I've seen they divide about 50/50, with/without. Of all the drillings I've owned only one has had bases.

Looks a lot like some Simson guns from Suhl that I have seen.
I look forward to seeing what you think of it.

It's quite possible, cr. Once it gets here and I can see the proofs and other stamps clearly perhaps I can learn, if the maker left his mark. I suspect the barrel knitter can be known. but, marks seem to have been a sometimes thing at that time.

If my good fortune and judgment holds with drillings as it has since the early 90's, I expect I'll be pleased. Sure hope so!!

By the way, my 45-90 DR is grouping nicely at 100 yards and when this wet cold spell is over, I plan to chrony the load and do some more test firing before going after some exotics later this year.

Great cr! Would you elaborate on "nicely?"

I don't remember your load, if I ever knew what it was but, my 45-90 with 80 grs. of black and a 480 gr. bullet cast 25-1 is pure "D" death on about anything.

How do you like the scope on your double? I have the claw mount rings for two of my doubles, one an O/U Merkel and the other a Vierordt SXS. I can't get used to the idea of using a scope on either. I just don't like them.

Picked up the drilling yesterday afternoon. It has NOT been restored, however. The shotgun bores have been lightly honed, not enough to remove the choke from the left barrel and, the rifle barrel is not excellent. It has slight pitting and will require jacketed bullets rather than cast, doggone it. Still, it isn't bad considering the corrosive priming it was subjected to.

Chamber cast confirmed 9.3 X 72R. Barrel slugged at .358-.359, not uncommon for a 9.3 X 72R proofed in December of 1924. I have a surfeit of 200 gr., .358 bullets and have the ability to swage bullets of that diameter if so desired.

The exterior is as good as the pictures if not better. The horn trigger guard repairs seem to be quite solid. I didn't see any marks/stamps that would indicate the actual maker or the barrel kniiter but, I'll be going over it with a fine tooth comb today. I'll be keeping it!

Sounds like you still have a great rifle there Sharps!
The bore will smooth up again with some cast bullets going thru it surely?
Daryl uses scitch-brite to barrels to bring them back to good (better) again

True - Scotch Brite in the maroon colour has saved a couple bores for friends.
It's also good for 'freshing' out a new cut rifled barrel that may have 'feathers' on the lands.
Any mfg'r that pulled a button through a rifled tube will not have those.(as is done by some muzzleloading barrel makers)
Should mention, I did not use the material dry, but "lubed" with WD40.

Then maroon Scotch Brite will have to go on my shopping list. I expect it will help.

I ran my bore scope through the barrels.....shotgun bores look new, as would be expected. Rifle barrel looks dismal through the scope. With the naked eye the lands look strong with pitting the first few inches. They sure don't look strong through the scope and the pitting goes 1/2+ the length of the barrel. I still believe it will shoot ok with jacketed bullets. It's just a chance you take and a choice you make with old firearms. I thought about trying valve lapping compound. It surely couldn't make the bore worse.

And, gas checked, cast bullets aren't out of the realm of possibility.

You could use the valve grinding compound on cast bullets - fire- lapping.
I did that with my Model 71 Mauser with a pitted bore. Came out quite shiny, but did enlarge it .001". The grooves were good, so I only put the compound on the bore riding nose of the bullets. I fired about 40 of them - squib loads, low vel.
Trail Boss would do well in this application - about a 70% load.

Ha....I never thought of fire lapping with it, thank you sir!. I have plenty of Trail Boss and cast bullets are no problem. The lands and grooves show quite a bit of pitting so I guess I'll smear the whole bullet. I don't believe .001 would hurt.

Welcome. I would definitely use the suggested starting load, which is 70% of powder touching the bullet base with zero compression.
I would suspect a vel. of 1,110fps (or so) with a 100% load.
So- something in the 700 to 800fps range would be perfect.
Roll the lubed bullets on a surface with 'powder' on it. Between 2 glass or steel plates would be likely be best.

Couple of my friends have bought and used PuffLon with very good results. Different grades for bore polishing.

Never used it myself though, but would "borrow" some if I needed it.
