Hornady specify 2050fps for the 450/400 on their ammo box, chronographed at 1940fps in my 24" barrel, far short of that specified! (Unless they use a 28” test barrel

Go to the Kynamco website http://www.kynochammunition.co.uk/cartridge%20collection.html
David Little loads the “modern Kynoch” cartridges to the original specifications, even using the original test barrels. They list all loads with the test barrel lengths.
.450/400 3 ¼”: 400 gr bullet at 2150 fps from a 26” test barrel
.450/400 3”: 400 gr bullet at 2125 fps from a 30”! test barrel
.404: 400 gr bullet at 2125 fps from a 28”! test barrel
.416 Rigby: 410 gr bullet at 2300 fps from a 26” test barrel
Don’t expect to get these advertised velocities from your real hunting rifle with a 22 – 24” barrel.

Thanks Kuduae
Well if you did 25fps per inch of barrel that's about 125fps give or take so pretty close to the 2000fps mark, Hornardy's must be close enough to the original load, but that doesn't mean they will regulate in say a H&H or WR double, they may, or they may be bloody woeful!
Picked up some 300gn Hornardy's for the .405 Winchester (.412"?), going to try these in my double & see what they do (75% rule) when my mate gets back from a BGR competition he'll give those a go for me!

My last trip to Zim, I found it very interesting that 3 of the PH''s in camp had either as a second backup or their backup were using/shooting a rifle in 416 Rem.. In my mind only solidified even further the ability of that cartridge...

As to loading a heavier bullet.. Considering I am blowing completely through a cape buffal standing broadside and still killing another on the off side, I don't think I need more penetration..

My solid I fired at the tuskless completely passed through her head, hit a smaller tree we noticed, passed through it and keep going ..

In my Rigby,

Hornady's factory 400 grains about 2300fps and high right compared to all my other loads and kick noticeably harder.

410 grain Woodleigh's 2450fps: 400grain Hydros 2550fps-exact same powder charge and primers in both.

400 grain Bertram's 2450, 400 grain Frontier, I have not Chronographed.

The Woodleigh soft and Hydros are same point of impact. The other groups overlap the Woodleigh's group.

This in a CZ550.

The 416Rem really needs a magnum length action to get the best out of it. However all Remington did was take out the middle action screw, remove the area in the mag well that the screw attached to so lengthen the mag box about 3 or 4 mm. I do not know the exact amount. They did this with the 8mm, 375H&H, maybe others.

By "getting the best out of it" I am simply talking about being able to seat bullets way out to the maximum velocity with the widest range of powders. Is this needed, no.

I am aware the heavier bullet will have a greater sd and bc..however my for Africa I still so no need for the 450 gr bullet.

MOST shots are closer.. I am already going through a buffalo and a half with what I am using.. and in the event I do have a longer shot, the 400 gr will be flatter shooting..

The only longer shot I have taken with it was the bush buck at 265. Glad I had practised before I went and knew where to hold for 150, 200, and 250 yards with that .416..

Preparation prior to the hunt is invaluable information - always.

Just like my bro. He has his zeros for 100 through 300 meters with his (my old) 9.3x57 loaded with 286gr. Norma Alaskans @ 2,200fps.

Geoff McDonald must have had someone ask for heavier than traditional bullet weights. Why? Hopefully will be able to ask one day.
