Red Rut time 2022
      #369827 - 04/10/22 07:52 PM

Hello guys - just back from 16 days of rut hunting with clients.

Weather was rather wet with some dry moments

changing clothes twice a day was a norm - I got moss growing on my back I guess...

Nevertheless - rut started quiet, but we soon managed to get 2 good old stags

And as they say -when it rains it pours - I was returning form a succesful stag hunt with a client when we spoted ancient Roe Buck - never seen before in this area - it went in the salt as well

Judging by his teeth - he did not have many time left

As time went by rut was setting in and we slowly bagged more

Trophy board after first week

Some lucky escapes - my client dropped his rifle once and it went off - into a rock next to my foot - sprinkled me with stone chips...we were rather quiet going back to the lodge...

And on one occasion I fell quite hard - broke the KKC stock on my working R93

Collected some bullets from fallen stags

Federal Power Shok from 30.06 Spr

and Lapua Naturalis from .308 Win

There were some nice moments scouting without clients - met some fine stags on the way (fine examples how it looks like) - this one with a herd:

https://youtu.be/bzlp6mC0Cv0

And this old beaten one (I was quite tempted to shoot it myself but let it go at the end):

https://youtube.com/shorts/pnzeVAmbxjE

Just at the end we got strongest strophies

It was a time very well spent. All in all we got 13 - age/trophy above average.

Being in the wild with those creatures for that long grows on you - one gets rather wild and the process of returning to "normal" is just painfull but will manage - as always, just to be back next year!

Wonderful stags 93!
Would have been a great time - except for the broken stock & the goose firing off a shot near you!

WOW.. rifle went off after client dropped it??

Yeah, it would have been quiet going back to camp in my case as well as he would have been unconscious..

Lucky you never got shot..

Great post--thank you for sharing

Yeah that client is lucky to still be walking in my opinion. Fantastic two weeks of hunting, very impressive trophies. They look very much like the stags that are found in the Carpathian mountains.
Well done.

Thanks guys - my pleasure!

On gun going off - it was a surreal experience - you know the one that you always think it happens to others...We always prepare and act in a away to avoid it, however - people are people and things will and do happen...heads up guys take even more care!

P.S. And about the guy that let it off - poor creature was just miserable beyond comprehension after that - I actually felt almost sorry about him once the dust settled - not taking in account if he'd hit me...sobering by all means...

I always find interesting how they are so similar to our N AMerican elk, yet have the more gray faces than the elk here..

Awesome looking animals..your a lucky man.. and based on your story, more ways than one..

I too feel bad for the guy who's gun went off, BUT, man, caution always needs to be at the forefront when out and about..

The guy who's ranch I took over, before he passsed, he would go bow hunting..but only had 1 arm, so used a cross bow.. He would walk around with an arrow in it, cocked.. I NEVER would walk in front of him in any direction..The guy was a walking hazard most times.. was very careless with rifles, shotguns, whatever.. Frankly amazed I never got shot by him in all those years and time we spent together..Super nice guy, but their bullets and mistakes are just as deadly as those who aren't.

When I was guiding moose hunters, all clients had open bolts and no rounds in the rifle. They did not load until we were in the stand when using one and even then, bolt handle up, not locked down.

That's the sort of guide or outfitter I avoid. But if only stand hunting I guess no round in the chamber is needed until in the stand.

I hunted or shot pheasants where the farmer had all shotguns open until a pheasant was flushed. Very very annoying. And for a nice engraved Sidekick like mine meant I had to carry it more by its engraved sidelocks with my sweaty offset hands. Not happy!

I understand a guide does not know if his clients are idiots or goose's. Or more experienced than him in some cases ...

Dropping a gun? It can happen. Usually I fall still holding my gun! I remember dropping my .30-06 once on a rocky mountain. Thankfully only minor scratches. Another time slipped on a slimy creek ford and dropped my .22 RF. It didn't look good a foot under the clear creek water.

If dropped will a gun discharge? In theory not a good one. Test yours and see. A lot will. Tested SMLEs once for this. Yes all did. Cocked, safety on, bounce it on the butt. Click.

If a person hasn't fallen over when hunting, they are on the rifle range, not a mountain.

Good think our 93mouse was not hit! But that rifle butt break must also have been painfully. Luckily Blaser does sell replacement stocks.

I'm guessing that stock was one of those pistol grip buttstocks with that huge cutout behind the pistol grip?

I'm thinking this sort of stock is far weaker at that place?

I love these posts. And also these snippets from Europe. Different from the hunting "cultures" we have here. Our "culture" in comparison is a bit non existent. One reason I enjoy hunting in different places. Not just shooting an animal. And not just a head or antlers on the wall. But meeting our hunters and experiencing their traditions cultures and doings.

I love red deer, wanted Reds instead of fallow. But fallow were available. My place is a bit small to have both. I wish we had roes too!!!

Lovely red stags.

Thanks 93mouse for posting. More please!

Didn't 93mouse indicated that the stock was a KKC stock? I think that might be an aftermarket job. Perhaps 93mouse can clarify.

No idea what a KKC is? I assume it is a wood composite?

Your KKC stock looked like wood though. I didn't look beyond the first page of the two links which showed only plastic stocks.

I've never broken one of my stocks but have seen a few broken.

I had a German hunter hunt with me here. It was late so we hunted for Chital deer. He was more of a hochsitz shooter not much of a stalker. Way way too slow to react. Thought he had five minutes to stare and examine the stags. Noot maybe 15 seconds to get a shot off before they run ...

But he loved the red stags then in velvet. Said those stags would have cost a fortune to hunt in Europe.

Thank you very much 93Mouse for this really excellent hunt report.
For members not from Western Europe, the well-respected Sax ammunition that are referred to in this post are manufactured by a German specialized ammunition maker, see https://www.sax-munition.de .
