was knowing the civil war maynard carbine with the .50 caliber brass case and the unusual rim but this
sxs combination gun 20 ga shot and .36 rifle barrel is completely new

Definitely a percussion nipple, so cap-lock, igniting through a central hole in the rim.
I believe the first Maynard breechloaders were the same & had similar tech. to the Gallagher Carbines, but with easier extraction of the "case".
That it is shotgun/rifle combination, is icing on the cake.
Cool!

In the mid-1960s, I saw a very early Ballard that used either rimfire or percussion cap. To fire with a cap, one loaded a RF cartridge that had a hole punched in the center.

Exactly, the Gallagher was similar.
This vid. shows the loading and firing of one. A similar system but without the large rim and more normal chamber, fitting tight to the breech of the bl.

the gallagher was an extrem idea with his half chambered case to get it by the fingers after firing, the maynard was another with the big rim

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvhVzDYglgY

impressive to see how much stuff a soldier had to lug around in this time

I was familar also with the later centerfire shotgun shells

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HydHlA_AYx4

RMC still offer .55 and .64 Maynard shotgun brass https://www.rockymountaincartridge.com/index_htm_files/RMC%20Shot%20Shells%20&%20Load%20Kits.pdf

the early maynard shotgun cartridge with seperate priming is probably the same case just with the small hole

Gun leaning on tree. A duck or goose hanging on the tree. Wolf hanging on tree or Fox? A sleeping or dead hound. A hound on a lease. One you d looking grumpy.

?

Funny choice for an engraving.

Feathers and fur, with gun and 3 hounds.

No mystery there!

after the hunt:
tree in background, double gun leant, bag is a fox and a big bird- anything between a crow and a eagle I would say, hitch on the tree,
three dogs, one moored with a dog lead on the tree, one in the background, one lie on the ground

its not made to see such big

Not surprised the "action" is cracked at that location. The iron is quite thin at that spot.
Intriguing, though.
Nasty casting!

Cracks appear to have been a result of the sharp corners which were stress risers. When that gun was made the physics of stress and its causes were not well known.
It is a cool gun fore sure, wish is was in better condition. I'm not sure if I understand how it locks up. I would assume the side lever cams the barrel back into the breech section. The listing says the, "locking lock missing." Which explains why the action is both open and closed in the pictures but the lever hasn't moved.

the lever have an excenter that move the barrel forward, you see it in the video.
the Löbnitz action must have been from the late 1830s. while the rifle here is without doubt a hunting rifle the norwegian comrade here shoots a model 1841 pistol so we see how it works.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8R2SN0GmP6M

he bits the paper cartridge but it was maybe possible to load the paper cartridge complete into the chamber.

here is a pair of more elegant made civil pistols https://www.lot-art.com/auction-lots/A-P...-28.5.20-morphy

Based on the Loebnitz system, primarily used in rifles used by the Norwegian military until they were either converted, scrapped, or replaced by cartridge rifles. German nickel silver blade front sights dovetailed in horizontally to the top flat of octagonal barrels. Like other Kammerladers, breech controlled by a crank on the right side which forces breech open and allows loading. Notch rear sight on scalloped out section of tang. Underhammer system with notch on hammer which catches on spring mounted on bottom of trigger guard. Bag grips checkered in two panels of point pattern checkering. Interestingly, at bottom on tangs is "1" and "2", indicating the pistols were manufactured as a pair. CONDITION: Very good. Metal is essentially dove grey with some old oxidation, action and trigger guard with some very light traces of case colors. Wood is very good, with some scattered marks from handling and operation, some loss of finish to high edges. Checkering is sharp. Bores are very good with strong rifling and some light black powder abrasion. Actions work appropriately when operated by hand. A neat pair of rarely seen pistols, as Kammerladers are primarily found as rifles. This is the only pair known to exist. EW Barrel Length: (Both) 7" Caliber/Bore: (Both) .60 Percussion FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: Danish Model: (Both) 1841 Kammerlader Cavalry Pistols Serial Number

I think have seen this pistol before but not a hunting rifle. some of them must have been made because the rifle have SN 163.

Very nice & interesting guns. Thanks lancaster.
The double rifle with automatic nipple covers was very nice indeed.
An elaborate and very expensive rifle.
