BRNO 8x60/8x68 question
      #369071 - 08/09/22 06:37 PM

Have been told about a 8mm BRNO rifle that might be for sale. The gentleman I was speaking with thinks it is 8x68S but then stated it had a spoon handled bolt. From the limited info I can find an 8x68 would fall into the 600, 601, 602 series of rifles which did not have the spoon handle. My very limited understanding is that something with a spoon handled bolt would more likely be the model 21/22 or ZG47 and probably be an 8x60 and NOT 8x68.

Does anyone know if the 21/22/47 series came in 8x68S?

Cheers Steve.

P.S. about to add a M21H in 6.5x57 to the funky old bolt gun collection.

The 21/22 series rifles were small-ring actions, so no 8x68S. 6,5x57, 7x57, 7x64, 8x57, 8x60. I'm not sure about the ZG's, though. They may have made them in 8x68S but they didn't have spoon bolt-handles.

Steve, this must definitely be a Brno model 21/22 if it has a spoon handle like the Mannlichers. The model 21 was build on a small ring action a copy of the mauser. The first models came without the dovetail grooves to fit scope mounts, but later change to dovetails for scope mounts. They came in normal rifle and fullstock, almost like the Mannlicher full stocks! Very light and perfect stock fit for snap shooting. The model 22 was a upgrade on the model 21, where the magazine top plate was smooth out so that you can close the bolt after the last round was ejected, and the bolt handle was bent at a lower angle to accomodate lower scope mounts! On the model 21 one need high mounts to fit any scope bigger than a old Weaver K series.
The model 21/22 only came in 5 calibres like jvw mentioned.
6.5x57
7x57
8x57
8x60
7x64
The last models that came out before the ZG47 had the new teardrop bolt handle, but otherwise it was the same as the older models.
I have al 5 calibres, and after my Mannlicher rifles is my favourite hunting rifles! See some photos of my Brno model 21/22's
Ooo, and they all have double set triggers. Also the build quality on these old Brno's is so good!!
Enjoy

Forgot to mention, the pigs take a beating from my Brno Mod21 in 8x57! I load 180gr Hornady at about 2500f/s. All one shot kills.
The mod 21 is the perfect rifle to carry the whole day as the weight is very light and the stock dimensions is perfect for snap shooting offhand. Both these pigs was running shots...

Thanks all for the information and as I suspected it is probably 8x60 which, to be honest, will be totally fine should it eventuate.

Vintage Canavas, owned a 21H years ago but had been re-barreled to 22/250 by a well known local gunsmith here in Adelaide Australia. Always liked the action but the calibre just was not for me. Eventually sold it without ever firing a shot.

Pick up the 6.5x57 21H tomorrow and hopefully it will present a bit better in the flesh than the pictures. Paid accordingly given it may be a bit of a roughy though. Still, a "well used" M21 is better than no M21!

Cheers

Just for info I got a mod.21 in .270 Winchester. It was a factory engraved model of the first type. Will try to find some pictures of that rifle that I have sold to a good friend.

Joel, are you sure it was original and not re-barreled? As far as I can get info on various sources the Model 21/22 only came in the 5 calibers.... But like the Mausers there is always a something interesting coming out of the woodwork!! Have you done custom builds on these actions/rifles before Joel?

That .270W rifle belongs to a good friend of mine and I hope to get the opportunity to photograph it.
I'm pretty sure it's full original. Perhaps some custom order (it's engraved) for a special client.
Presently I'm building a 7x57 (aka .275 Rigby !) on such an action.
Will post some pictures in the nearest future.

looking forward for the pics! It would be interesting if there is indeed other calibers, because then I can start looking for them...
