Gun Slips
      #36881 - 05/09/05 07:47 AM

I'm considering making a couple of gun slips out of my elephant hide, and was wondering what you guys think is the best lining to use inside a gun slip. Leather, fabric, something else?

These slips should obviously be made to last a very long time, both inside and out.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Erik

Hi Erik, I am in the process of sewing some out of Zebra, and Buffalo, they will look like our Africase gun cases. When I finish one I'll send you a photo

Eric

I've had a couple of saddle scabbards made and I thought real sheepskin would be great for a lining. I was quickly talked into the artificial type as being less likely to hold moisture.

Now, before I go I stuff a rag soaked in wd-40 down inside to put some oil on the lining and never have to worry about rust.

The two Elephant skin cases I have have some sort of leather lining that is very smooth and the rifle slips in and out quite easily. I don't think they would be much good for a wet hunt though.

Doesn't the WD evaporate? Have you thought of a silicone spray? I guess you haven't had a problem so far.

Hey Adam, que paso?

No, because it is closed I guess it stays better. The only downside is that the scope is covered also so you need scope covers.

Mickey,

wouldn't the WD40 affect the wood stock in a negative way after a while?

Eric

I have not noticed a problem. The rifle I carry most often is a mod 71 Winchester lever action. The original finish on the metal is almost entirely gone but he original stock finish is fine.

When actually hunting I use a Carbon fiber stocked 340 Weatherby so the stock issue is non existant.
