Charged by a Grizzly: A 10mm Glock (and Serious Practice) Saved My Life

Sam Kezar was able to fire seven rounds amid a split-second grizzly bear charge. Those shots, plus a well-placed round from his buddy, saved him from being mauled

I'd say one lucky bloke but he had a fair bit of foresight plus practice. I think that played a major part in his survival. Good on him.

Ripp,
Thanks for posting. Great survival story. Interesting that the bear spray only impacted a hunter and not the bear. The rest of the story is taht teh bear had been shot a couple of weeks earlier and, also with a cub, was ready to maul the next person it saw up close. Luckily the huinter had practiced with his pistol.

How the pepper spray performed is why I carry a firearm vs spray when in Griz country.

I personally know 3 individuals who have had the same thing happen with spray.. Stiff wind blowing in your face will bring that spray back onto yourself vs the bear you are trying to spray.. One way to help prevent that is to hold the spray until the bear is mere feet from you and then dump the can into the bears face, holding/pointing it into a lower angle vs middle or upper quadrants..Good plan but not many can hold off spraying that long with a pissed off griz heading your way at 35 TO 40mph..

I still prefer the firearm.. wind and close distance does not deter a bullet or in this case, bullets..

Based on the fact it was a wounded griz, and a wounded sow griz at that, there is little doubt she would have done a very vicious attack on that person had she gotten to him..and probably would have killed him..
