Roe Bucks and Boars in Croatia
      #368586 - 24/08/22 03:44 AM

Back from Croatia in the beginning of August - was hunting Roe Bucks and Boars.

Will keep it short and will add more if needed.

It was hot and dry - boar population is very good, roe rut was just beginning. Scenery was - well it somehow reminds me of Africa - I wouldn't be surprised if a Buffalo, Elephant or Lion would be around :

We were calling bucks in the daytime and waiting for boars in the evenings - through the nights - tho at the end it wasn't needed since boars were active during day/dusk time already - it was quite interesting when one was calling Roe Buck a boar would turn up to check if there is a free snack somewhere - looks like they are quite used to look for a roe fawn and eat it if they could:

Boar on Roe Call 1

Boar on a Roe Call 2

Anyway - on one of the evenings I was sitting on a passage when at app 150m a boar appeared in the long grass between the bushes - he was walking slowly without stopping - as soon as I saw that he was worth shooting he went behind a tree and soon appeared again just to enter the bush not to be seen anymore - however I managed to squeeze one in prior to that.

Loud "flop" of solid bullet hit and he was down on the spot - just to be back on his feet making mad dash toward bush - I could see he was lacking some steam - and he was gone. We found it 50m away. Bullet - 8x68S SAX - entered on the shoulder and exit behind the opposite shoulder. 5-6 years old, 150kg - on the hook gutted.

On the final morning I was calling for Roe Buck - and at first a boar sow came to a call - when she figured out that I wasn't interesting she went off - pigglets were 2 minutes behind her.

Then I spotted a buck chasing doe 200m away - I made a call but the buck wouldn't bother...so since I had time ( I was waiting for a guy to collect me later on) I kept on calling - finally after one hour - buck obviously had it with a doe, came through the bushes looking for me at 50m and was down for good...

Nice old buck

It was another great summer in Croatia

Thank you for this great hunt report and congratulations on harvesting such a huge boar - 150 kg gutted is a huge beast in Western Europe, and nice roe buck. 8x68S is a really good caliber I will also report on soon.

My comments in blue.

I like the scene. Never been to the old Yugo republics. Closest was Pez across the border in Hungary. A dryer summer scene, similar to here. Not like the usual lush green of Europe elsewhere.

High seat shadow photo bomb!

Nice shooting land.

Excellent, a 8x68S.

Lovely piggie. I wish we had true wild boar here. Our fermers don't.

Doggie is excited.

Waidmannsheil. Lovely buck who went out in style and got tonpass on his genes first.

It was another great summer in Croatia

I still have to watch the videos.

The fairy tale continues - I have just returned from a weekend in Croatia and luck continues to accompany me.

130 kg on the hook

Massive tusks, that are broader at the top than at the bottom - indicating age well beyond 10 years (Brandt coeficient is valid until the top width matches the bottom - and the coeficient is 1 - meaning age of 10 years - this one passes it by a margin).

Trophy scored 117.70 CIC - 2.3 points short of gold medal

Boars of this age are rearer than hen's teeth - rather non existent due to hunting, predators, traffic and other danger that face them and I am over the moon - by all means a Life time trophy!

And a marvelous trophy for the wall. Congratulations.

93mouse,

Lovely boar. Great tusk shield. Looks huge.

Did you bring the meat home? What do you cook it as? Roasts? Chops? Casseroles/stews/goulash? Sausages?

Any particular Slovenian recipes? How is Slovenian cooking different or similar to Croatian, Hungarian, Austrian?

Last question. Domestic pork is acwhitish meat. Is boar similar? Or a much redder meat? When I had it it was quite red. But may have been marinated in red wine.

Thanks.

Enjoyed your photos.

Thank you gents - John boar of that age is only for sausages/salami. Meat is barren and dark, so when you are making salami or sausages a fat from the domestic pig is a must - otherwise they fall apart.

Best eating is of a young boar - up to 1 year old from "under the oven" - the roasting pan containing the meat and vegetables is covered with embers and left for a couple of hours - the meat is soft and juicy. Or steaks are made - breaded and fried...or goulash

Thank you guys.

64 - fox is in fact red jackal
57 - rifle is my old Blaser R93 - 9,3x62 with new stock.

My Merkel is standing by, waiting for driven hunts later in the year - since I don't see sights anymore it sports 2 scopes - S&B 2,5-10x and Kahles 1-5x

Looks all great Mouse. I'd read your thread but hadn't replied yet.

Nice roebuck.

Red jackal? In Europe? I've never heard of them.

The Merkel looks impatient to be used.

Mouse,

Can you answer a question.

How does the regulation fare or change between the open sights, the lighter scope, and the heavier scope? If at all. Thank you.

John as of recent (after the scopes were added barrels were re-regulated) every barrel when cold shoots exactly at the point of aim, while shooting one after another there is some direction difference between barrels - the slower/heavier the load more spread there is - with 154gr at 3120 fps it is none while with 293gr at 2280 fps the left barrel shoots app 15cm to the left at 100m. At close range out to 50 m doesn't mean much.

Here is a small boar shot in full speed at 50m - only right barrel was needed

Ah, I see!!

(Actually, I don't anymore, just like you. Haha. Yeah, scopes help!)
