Mauser Type A in 8x60
      #368452 - 20/08/22 01:40 AM

Good day gents
I am in the process of buying a Mauser type A in 8x60 calibre, but I cannot figure out if it is a .318 or .323 calibre?
I have checked on this forum and some other sites but it still is a mystery to me....
Maybe one of you can help??
To my knowledge if it is .323 cal then it show 8x60S or 8x60 Magnum. This markings is just 8x60. But the markings on the underside of the reciever is confusing.
See attached pics

I would say this is a 8x60 with I caliber (.318 bullet). anyway you need to slug the barrel of this rifle when in your hands to be sure about this.

7,85mm = .318 bore

7,92mm = .323 bore

The strict differentiation of 8 mm I and S caliber barrels and cartridge designations came with the German 1940 proof law only. According to proofmarks and serial number your rifle was made in 1931, well before. In his book “Mauser – Original Oberndorf Sporting Rifles”, page 275, Jon Speed shows a 1926 Mauser factory dimensions chart. Here the dimensions of 8x60 barrels are given as 7.85 mm land, 8.1 mm groove, twist length 240 mm. Your barrel is slightly wider with an 8.15 mm = .321” groove diameter, sort of a compromise. But that factory chart has a footnote that reads translated: “* The barrels for the 8x57 and 8x60 get the chamber and throat for the S cartridges, so those may be used as well.” So the 1920s -30s original Mauser Oberndorf sporting rifles digest 8x60 S loads happily. Go ahead and shoot it with modern 8x60 S ammo.

There you go! Thank you very much Kuduae for the simple explanation! You are a wealth of information. Now I can go ahead and buy the rifle! Will keep you guys posted on the performance with the .323 bullets.

The serial number dates this type M Stutzen to 1930.

Thank you , It’s all matching with original bluing to all parts , but at some stage the stock has had a light refinish , not by me but it is too good not to have been done , it’s a lovely rifle in the hands .
We slugged the bore and the throat measures .323 and is showing wear but approx 2 inches in it is .3205 , I am going to use .321 bullets used for 32 Winchester and have ordered some , from what I read on here the .323 bullets will be fine also .
