Another double won at auction.
      #368351 - 15/08/22 02:20 AM

just received the invoice for this double rifle that I won. Nice one I think.
.577 Gustav Richter S/S Hammer Double Rifle - Pre 1898 R 29500.00
Top lever action with back action side locks, barrels of 27,6' marked to "Gustav Richter Breslau". Barrels haves two leaf rear sight as well as folding tang mounted peep sight.
Hunting scenes engraved to action, hammers and lock plates. Horn trigger guard with
adjustment screws to triggers. Chequered fore-end and semi-pistol grip, cheekpiece and
chequered horn buttplate to stock. Mint bores, very good original condition overall. A top
grade rifle with excellent bores.

Well done Casper!
This old lady certainly looks in rather good nick, I hope she shoots as good as she looks.
Very nice indeed, looking forward to the range report when you get the chance.

I'm wondering why the rear sights fold down flush. Would it be able to shoot 24 ga shotshells? seems to me the rifling would ruin a pattern after 10 yards or so.

Casper,
you said it has a peep sight - that's why the back sights fold down, better view!

Forgot about the peep. Better for my old eyes.

Emil Richter, Susernstr., Breslau, Silesia (Wroclaw in Poland since 1945) opened shop in 1865. Mentioned in 1875 too. By 1890 his son Robert had moved to Sagan, Silesia ( now Zagan, Poland).

Thanks for the info Kuduae. Only thing that popped up with google was an artist. Is that info written down somewhere? Might need it to prove it's pre 1898.

Nice looker there Casper.

Will be interested to know which version of .577 it is chambered for. (I'm assuming it is a Black Powder Express?)

Kuduae it says that the maker was Gustav Richter not Emil.

I asked the same thing about my 10-bore WR. Fold down leaf rear sight.

Someone said it was for very close shooting.

When that wounded tiger, bear or boar is in the very thick stuff, fold down the rear sight and shoot it like a shotgun.

I wish shot would work. Wouldn't these .577s and 10-bores be versatile then, ball and shot!

Well done, Casper! Welcome to the .577 club.

I'm glad to see some of our members still are in acquisition mode. I still reach out and grab on occasion.

Please augment this thread with additional photos and range reports once you get the rifle in hand.

Oops, sorry! I dug for „Richter, Breslau” only and missed on the first name. Some more digging led to a Gustav Richter, Olderstr. 30, Breslau, gunshop and gunsmith, mentioned 1891 and 1905. He advertised aboxlock, top lever shotgun model "Plume", but so did other gunshops, f.i. Peterlongo and several French ones. That’s all I found.

There was a 12 bore Lancaster Colindian for sale some 10 years ago that did not have a rear sight (rib never cut for read sight). I was told that this paradox rifle was set up for point shooting at close (50 yds or less) game.
The low & high sights on my Tolley 500 BPE will lay flat which gives a view like shooting a shotgun. Out to 50 yds, it does fine.
