Sauer & Son 8x60 Mauser
      #367545 - 07/07/22 11:13 AM

Recently bought a nice Mauser 98 Sporter made by J.P.Sauer & Son. Trouble is, it is chambered in the
8x60 but not the 8x60S. I slugged the bore and it does have a .318 groove diameter barrel. I have found 8x60S data but none for the .318 bore version. If anyone can steer me toward some up to date load data I would appreciate it.

With the correct diameter bullets, I don't think the load data would differ much if at all.
Just start at the low end and work up until you are happy.
Let's see the rifle!

Need to check chamber neck dimensions, as it may be chambered to shoot the .323 bullet through the .318 bore.

kuduae posted a good explanation of this in response to my ignorance on the subject some time back.

Will find the thread and post link here.

Marrakai,

Thanks for posting. I had read a similar description of the I & S bore diamaetrs on rifles.

I have a BSW DR in 8x57 that mikes at 0.323" for the first couple of CM and then tapers fairly quickly to 0.318". The previous owner said he shot S bullets (0.323") however, because this is a double rifle, I only shoot 0.318" bullets. If this was a bolt rifle, I would use the more common and more available 0.323" bullets.

Ha! Like your BSW my Type B Mauser would probably mike around .323 for the first few cm too,
but unlike your BSW its solely due to throat erosion!!

Anyone looking down the bore of that Mauser would likely consider it a write-off, but it shoots one-hole groups off the bench at 50m with iron sights, probably due to the squeeze-bore effect!

A digression, but I am considering opening up the chamber-necks on a couple of the Lee Enfields in my collection with cordite-eroded throats, to shoot .318 8mm bullets swaged-down to ~.315, hoping for similar results!
Already bought the .318 bullets...

if you cut down the S loading data by 10% you are allways on the safe side

Thanks for all the advice. Going to pull it out of the stock soon to examine the proof marks. In the meantime I found an article in the Feb.-March 1997 issue of HANDLOADER magazine that has some original data from Norma and Barnes Bullets as well as data from the author's testing. So, I have a good place to start. Also have some .318 bullets from Hawk Custom bullets. I also have some .321 bullets made for the .32 Winchester Special I can try
