Out local main liquor store has a lot of "other" countries treats. I will have to see if they have any Barossa Port next time I am there. I do like a small glass of port after supper, several in fact.

The old Stockwell Hunt Club used to shoot fro some 80 or so years. My Great Grand Father, my Grand Father and my Uncle used to attend the King's Birthday shoots. And I suppose the last ones for a decade were the Queen's Birthday Shoots. My father never used to go, told to stay home and work.

A few years ago we resurrected it. Only a clay target shoot once a year, and a dinner afterwards in Stockwell. And the clay target shoot is only a shoot in a quarry with simple clays thrown. I shoot way too badly however.

It would great to see a simulated field clay shoot instead. And even more so, a game shoot of some sort.

Most of the members of the SHC also shoot at the driven fox shoots, which unfortunately are during grape vintage in March every weekend. I got to the last one this year. About 50 foxes shot. The shoot is a line of shooters walking through the fields and hills shooting foxes as they walk. A blocking line of shooters is positioned at the far end of the walk.

That's a great account of old tradition.
Great way to keep the fellows sharp in their skills, close as associates, and strong in the community with the sport.

Great to see the wildlife joining in the merriment as well, that hare with the smoke and the cup quite the character...
;-)

Good on the young fellows in the modern photo, representing the new generation. Let's keep the tradition alive!

In our youner countries traditions and cultural practices are rarer and take time to develop,, Some of course get lost over time.

Younger countries often have a freer lifestyle and practices. Less hide bound, in strict rules and frowns.

But sometimes these things add interest and richness.

A night spotlighting like the most some only get up to, is nothing like a good day out with 45 guys and a few girls, especially if social aspects are added to it.

Some of our traditions and culture is borrowed or inherited from the "old countries" too of course. Except here it is not compulsory.

Must dig out some more photos to share.

Maybe a 'lancaster' in the future, will dig out my photos to share of the "old days".

Not the same group, but many members in common, the Fox Cull Group shot 84 foxes last Saturday. Highest tally any single day. I didn't attend that shoot but did the shoot two weeks prior. 54 foxes that day. Four shoots this year, I'll go again first Saturday April.

I saw four foxes, one at a time, All in one stand. A dry shallow creek crossed in front of me. The foxes ran to it, into it, then ran along it out of sight. I was going to shoot at the fourth though really too far, but the walking guys had arrived, one a little too close behind the fox. Using 36 GM loads of BBs. The foxes ran along the creek, and usually I heard shots in that direction a few minutes later. I think sitting much closer to that creek would be better. But the guy to my right was elderly and didn't want to climb the fence so I was limited in how far it was safe to go forward. Next time maybe different.

About 33 shooters when I shot. Ten or so blockers. The rest walking. 20 to 30 KMs in a day, Four drives, one drive in three successive parts. Some become blockers by the end, some swap. Walkers shoot the most. I've got some health issues at the moment, can't even walk in a straight line for long so blocking is it.

Foxes are driven and shot in late Summer and Autumn when still young and stupid. Unfortunately the hides are Summer hides are not thick furred. None are skinned, left to rot. 138 furs would make a wonderful rug in one go. The farmers want foxes culled before the lambing season.

A normal year is maybe 130 to 170 foxes. 2024 promises to be a good year.

The old Stockwell Hunt Club shot foxes, hares and rabbits. A score was collected for each. Far more rabbits in the rabbit plague conditions before the introduction of myxomatosis.

But lots of roos today. None shot of course. Roos jumping all over the place as each drive got going, I had one roo sit in front of me unaware of me, The back of its head an inch in front of my shotguns muzzles. The gun in my lap.

That's a LOT of foxes.
I know the feeling. I was in an "Old Man's" Blind, moose/elk/white tail hunting, and a black bear stood up in front of the blind and looked right into the muzzle of my 14 bore rifle. I'd been asked not to shoot it, as the land owner's mother in law needed that fat little bugger's fat for her Christmas baking. This happened fall of 2015. The next week, the Mother-in-law's husband shot it for the fat. 5 gallon pail - full.

The roos are fun. Hopping everywhere. Often past a couple of metres away. To and fro, Drawing under fences hoping over them Trying to jump through them. Sometimes hopping straight towards you, you wave a hand sothe roo misses you.

One of the walkers encountered eight foxes together. They were drawing on their haunches, on their bellies, looking up with their heads above the grass every now and then. Cunning. But eight together, younger. He shot two.

I tried out my Simson Suhl side by side 12-bore shotgun on the day. As discussed elsewhere I've decided to try out this shotgun as my specialist fox and "long range" field shotgun. My first purchased shotgun but I acquired another a week later. The Simson looks almost unused. Some duck swamp use. This shotgun has fixed chokes nd is tightly choked I joke full and extra full. So if pointed well might do well at extended shotgun ranges. I just need to pull the trigger... I'll give it a go at cardboard targets, clays in wire holders, at various ranges with BBs. Give it a go on aerial clays with 7 1/2s or 9s. See how extra full performs. I've used my Greener Empire 12-bore in the previous shoots

One day, maybe next year I'll have totrya mchugh and put a GoPro only head. See if a few seconds of excitement can be recorded from the hours of sitting around . The roo footage might be fun especially for non Australian members.

This time the area was dry, driving some of the roads and tracks very dusty, several times has to stop as the dust from in front resulted in zero visibility. The area between the Barossa and this close by Mid North farming area is often almost treelessA wide valleydry grassed and treeless hills. But the fox shooting hills have lots of trees. Returning to the Barossa from the mid North, the landscape becomes rich green again because of the vines.

I attended yesterday's fix drives. As a blocker only again. Myself I got a shot of at the only fox I saw. Second to last drive, A "pray" shot, at 70 metres or more. The dust pattern behind the fox didn't look too bad though. My second cartridge was a misfire, indented primer. Ammo or shotgun? Will test it out. My Simson Suhl side by side shotgun.

I'm going to test shoot BBs at stationary clay targets at various ranges. And coreflute drawn foxes. See how they do and don't work. How they pattern on the fox kill zone. What the trajectory is as well.

The tally for the Fox Cull group is it's believed an all time record, at 269 foxes. I know the numbers don't add up to that.

I took some photos yesterday. Mostly just the terrain where my stands were. And at the lots of roos. M

My new 1989 Mitsubishi Triton 4WD ute got some use.

That's it for the this year for the fix drives. The local farmers love the thinning out of foxes which predate on the lambs and birthing ewes.

Myself I'm going to shoot some foxes here at home. I've got one or more visiting every night. I think some might be living in the vineyards, eating hanging super ripe grapes.

Some initial photos from the fox cull group drive(s).

My "new" hunting vehicle and farm ute. I purchased my father's 1985 or 1989 Mitsubishi Triton 4WD ute.

New! Feels like it to me.

2.6 L, 4 cylinder petrol.

Seen here parked behind where I was stationed as a blocker at a recent fox cull drive.

It's cool to finally have a ute.

I've still got the 1990 Series 80 Landcruiser.

***

My shooting apparatus. A Simson Suhl side by side 12-bore, with tight chokes. A plain working gun. Using 36 GM loads of BBs.

Need to add some roo photos.
