Mwah nothing unusual here. Especially for such a new modern rifle as that!

An older .44/40 M92 lever action would be cool. Quite common here once.

I have a Model 1876 "Centennial" in .50/95 that would work even better.
368gr. at 1,650fps.(almost an elephant gun)

I have used a P14 in .303 British for pig some years back. Running shots I'm not so used to but took a good boar with it, I didn't see a gum tree as I swung thru & fired. Strangely I hit him back a lot further than I aimed. The bullet blew thru 4" of tree before hitting him & still dropped him.
Nothing wrong with them at all! The last P14 was made 1917?, both of mine are Winchesters, so that makes them centenarians as well.

In my circle, the big news would be someone hunting with a rifle LESS than 100 years old!

That is the rifle and cartridge I started hunting with, but that was 70 odd years ago. Funny, but I have recently had a hankering to get another 25-35. I have been looking for a contender barrel or a combination gun with that rifle caliber.

Thank God so many love the latest and greatest fashion. That does nothing more than a cartridge over a hundred years older. Else we would to pay a multiple for old clunkers.

John,

That is a wonderful hunting story and better yet, a father/son hunting story. Even better is that the rifle was a vintage Winchester in 25/35.

When I first started hunting in the early 1960s, I was somewhat ignorant and looked down on 30 WCF, 25/35, etc as old, inadequate cartridges. I heard stories by friends of deer being lost. These were poorly hit but we thought that if hit be a modern, high power cartridge, they would be freezer meat. The thought was that you could hit a deer in the leg with a powerful cartridge and it would drop.

Later, I read that a large number of deer were killed with Winchester 73s and 92s in 44 WCF which is even less powerfun than a 30 WCF.

Later, while in the service, I talked to a friend whose father very successfully hunted larger, northern deer with his 94 Winchester in 25/35. His method of hunting was still hunting in northern Vermont woods. He only had one rifle and knew how to shoot it. His commen was that shot placement was more important than brute force. That comment has been reinforced over the last 50 years/

I now like still hunting with vintage rifles. One rifle is Austrian and is in 6.5x52R (European version of 25/35).

I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with what he did but I have a question. How many try and hit the shoulder when an animal is standing broadside? I aim a little ways back in the ribs so that I don't ruin as much meat. Is it just me?

When hunting for meat and not an expensive overseas trophy, the same for me.

casper50,

Thanks for your comments. I agree. Hunters I know try to shoot just behing the front leg abd slightly lower as that doesn't destroy the shoulder.

My comments about "hit a deer in the leg" may not have been that clear. The comment wasn't about a should hit but a leg hit. We were ignorant and thought that a powerful gun completely made up for poor shot placement and just a solid hit in the leg would bring a deer down which isn't correct. A deer can run fairly well on 3 legs. A deer can also run very far (and get lost) on a gut shot.

Of course, deer do always cooperate and all one has is a front, tail, shoulder, or neck shot and of course, one has to make a decision as to whether to take the shot.

The point that I was tryiong to make is that it is fun hunting with vintage rifles in calibers like 25/35 and even 22HP. Of course, I also like hunting with a pistol.

I have a feature article in the new 2023 Gun Digest on a number of turn of the 20th century rifles I have been privileged to own and hunt with. And I never once felt handicapped!

I have used my Alex Henry circa 1873 with Damascus barrels and NFB loads in a 450-400 x 2&3/8 for big eastern whitetail
Deer up here eastern Canada. I use a 200 grain .410” cast bullet at 1850 feet. It would be somewhat similar to hunting with a .41 magnum revolver I suppose. Broad side shots are what I look for but it is effective. They don’t bang/flop but they do get dead after running for a bit like a scalded cat.
