Northern Territory Goose Season

Goose opener in a few hours, just finished patching-out the Greener and organizing the gear. Did a recce of Harrison Dam yesterday evening, not much water for this time of year, it might dry up completely if we don't get some early rain. Saw two salt-water crocs, biggest maybe 3 metres. A couple of thousand geese there too, thankfully. As long as no-one parks their white Toyota out on the flat (with the stereo on full-bore), or encourages the kids to indulge in the usual quad-bike races, a few might come within range of my barrels.

Limit is seven geese and seven ducks per day, for four months! Gotta love the Top End!

Maybe the Victorians should all chip in and buy that Leevy creep a ticket to go up for the open so as he can rescue any wingers.
I'm sure the crocs would take a dim view of him pinching their tucka.

Well it was a very pleasant sunrise out on the goose-camp this morning, plenty of birds flying, not too many shooters, just perfect.

I was a bit worried that the birds might not be fat this year, on account of the low water-level, but they're obviously getting good feed somewhere as they were all rolling. I'd almost forgotten just how heavy a full bag can be, especially since I was lucky enough to swing onto a few of those big humpy-headed thugs right at the front of the 'V'.

Cajun goose for dinner tonight, mmmm-yum!

O&BTW, if your going to send that goose up here, Al, we want him skinned, gutted, and blister-wrapped ready for the freezer. I'm nearly out of dog-food...

I see that your old gun did a splendid job on the geese.
I assume that the gun you used was the one we discussed the other night..(had a bit knocked off the end)

Yeah, Al, that's the one: my 8-pound quail-gun! Greener 'Empire' E-17 grade, with 2 inches lopped off the muzzles in a previous life. No choke whatsoever!

Unfortunately I have been unable to drop Bismuth shot this year due to the house-move etc, so had to open with steel. My beloved Cashmore sidelock spent open-day in the safe! I really don't like steel shot much, had to run down two potential escapees, and twice I had to belt the same bird with the second barrel to bring it down.

If I had to shoot steel pellets exclusively, I'd be looking for a good 3-inch 10-bore and buying '0' size shot, or even BBs!
