505 Gibbs
      #366065 - 29/05/22 08:18 PM

Some where along the line I fell in love with the 505 Gibbs. The clean lines of an un-scoped big bore rifle and a bore diameter that will quicken your pulse and swallow your dreams.
After my last Safari five years ago I decided to put one together for my next hunt this August a Buffalo and Tuskless affair. Good Friend and local gunsmith agreed to take on the project.
Here are a few pictures of the journey

Wood...Bastogne
Green Mountain Arms Action
Krieger Barrel 24"
Gun weight 11.0 lbs
LOP 14.5"s
Sights filed in for 525gr CEB Solid 2300fps

Used to have the same problem.
Awhile back I found a workaround for the format of IMGUR's links:
You just need to edit out the "?1" on the last of the string of the address.

No ubb uses image small case. Not img. The address would always finish in jpg, gif, png. Lower or upper case as the original file is. No jpeg as for apple graphics.

Width of image is ideally 1024 pixels or less. To fit in the page. Larger will require scrolling left or right. A lot larger? Use just the address without image code. Readers will have to open the graphic to view.

While reading on the net found this article.. thought I would share and see who has the answer..

.505 Gibbs Rifle Brass 'H H' Headstamp: Maker and Quality Info Sought

This .505 Gibbs brass, used in belt-felt .50 caliber rifle ammunition, is headstamped "H H." Do any Guns & Ammo readers know the origin of the stamp?

What the hell does this mean:

"This .505 Gibbs brass, used in belt-felt .50 caliber rifle ammunition"

What 5.5 Gibbs is loaded for a belt-fed .50 cal rifle?
What is a belt fed .50 cal. rifle?

Ha ha, belt fed .505 Gibbs rifle!

I'll have to swap my 50 round drum magazine fed .505 Gibbs rifle for one of those nifty belt fed Gibbs.

HH stands for "Huelsen - Horneber" = Horneber cases, of course. Made by Dieter Horneber, Erlanger Str. 259, Fürth, Bavaria.

Certainly a great cartridge. I have always been fascinated by it, so much so I bought a CZ550 chambered for it. Un-shootable to start with as the stock was totally wrong but once the stock was completely reshaped it is a beauty to shoot. Stout recoil for sure but easily handled. Great ballistics and very flat shooting especially considering the size of the projectile. I hope to use it on Buffalo later this year if all goes according to plan.

Your rifle looks great and uses what is arguably the best action for that cartridge. The barrel profile is quite close to the original and looks good as does the stock. Well done.

I was quite surprised at just how flat shooting the 505 was using the 525gr bullet when determining what distance to file in my sights. With a 525gr CEB solid at 2300fps I chose to file the Rear Sight in at 30yrds. this is where the bullet "First" crosses Line of Sight. The bullet then stays within .50" of Line of Sight and crosses again on the way down a 90yrds and falling below the projectile width at 110yrds and 3.5"s low at 150.
What more can you ask for

Yes point blank out to 200 yards, the same for my 500 Jeffery shooting 570g TSX's at 2300 fps. For elk / deer at 300 yards hold on the top of the back right behind the shoulder

Yes definitely, I will do a full report with pics, will have to learn how to post photos, LOL

The gun is partially in the white at the moment and there are bits under construction. When I go up to the NT the gun will be in stage 1 and I will take some pics. Then I will finish t to how I want in stage two and take some more pics. I have learned a lot about the CZ550 and how to improve it and modify it for much better function. When its all finished I will do the same to the 416 Rigby I have, also a CZ550.

One thing I have also learned is that there are many tricks and mods that must be employed to make the CZ550 handle the 505 Gibbs properly and function correctly. It is nothing like any other cartridge out there. It would be interesting to see an original Gibbs built on a Mauser action and see how it operates and any tricks that they employed.

I have a 505 barrel blank to sell if anyone is interested. I believe it's an old Buhmiller barrel. It was a friend's barrel but he died before he could make the rifle. His widow asked me to sell it for her.

$175 plus shipping.

PM me if you are interested

Matt,
could you let on what your mods were please?
I have a CZ550 in 404 Jeffery, that had an issue picking up the first round so I added a tapering block behind the follower which made the rounds sit higher at the back, works perfectly now.
I think the main issue was that the magazine spring was simply just too weak!
Apart from that I have no issues with it, recoil is stout with 400's going at 2300+fps, but I find the stock perfect for me.
A mate had one in 505 Gibbs, it shot 600gn pills to the sights perfectly at say 30-40 yards, not sure what speed they were doing but they punched thru 18" or more of gum tree & kept on going!
It had one hell of a lot of recoil, but I found it quite tolerable standing up, as did my son who was only 16-17 at the time, made him step back a few paces when he fired!
Every time I fired it i knew exactly where those bullets were going, right on the money every time, gave you a lot of confidence firing it!

Gorgeous! Congratulations! Looking forward to some hunting photos.

Steve is that barrel profiled and well preserved?

I have a 505Gibbs action sitting with a friend in the US. Bought it whilst under the influence of oxy after some major orthopedic surgery

If you have any left over you might need it if you're silly like me and shoot 30 shots from the bench in a T-shirt first time out

LOL the 505 Gibbs is actually an easy cartridge to shoot. There are two key ingredients, gun weight and stock shape. However stock shape is by far and away the most important part. My 505 is light in comparison to other 505's but the stock shape is so good now after Ross Waghorn re-shaped it that the fact it is slightly lighter doesn't matter one bit. Sure you know you are shooting a big gun but it is fantastic to shoot.

The 2300 fps story is also bullshit, that was an advertising fantasy, 2150 fps is actually correct.
