While on the topic. Derringers. What is the best cartridge chamberings for a proper sized petite derringer? Two barrelled under and over tiny handgun

I like a .22 Magnum Derringer in the good old days.

With such a short barrel isn't a wider than 22 calibre better?

Do you have one? Are they any good?

Derringers, usually 2 shot. IMHO, anything more than a .38 SPL likely has way too much recoil to even use the 2nd shot. The .38 might also do this. Perhaps .22 LR or .22 WMR are indeed the best?
The use of wax or oil coated bullets (.22LR Match ammo) is likely the best as it will drag and deposit bacteria and dirt into the wound. This will not immediately fatal, makes for a very difficult wound to clean. The fewer witnesses at your trial, the better.
Smooth, hard sided bullets are less prone to this 'dirty" ammo scenario.

Seems to me most were .41 Rimfire, so anything that duplicates or closely simulates those ballistics would be a great place to start.

In a centrefire, that would mean something from .380 Revolver to .450 Bulldog or .450 Adams I guess. No problem shortening existing modern revolver cases to fit.

Easy to chamber up and load down to your comfort level!

Unfortunately my unashamed love of the historically correct stops well short of the obsolete rimfire cartridges, so if it was me getting something made new, I would order a single-barrel Colt 2nd Model replica chambered for a shortened .41 Colt cartridge, loaded to .41 Rimfire ballistics or thereabouts.

Remember too that the correct spelling for Henry Deringer's little gems from Philadelphia doesn't have the "double R": the American arms industry corrupted the spelling when the genre was widely copied sometime around the introduction of breech-loading.

Exactly, Marrakai. According to Wikipedia: 130 gr (8 g) Lead 425 ft/s (130 m/s) 52 ft⋅lbf (71 J).

An outside lubricated heel bullet.

Anyone shot with it would be in trouble, and need the damn thing removed quickly, the quicker the better, unless, of course, your wallet or pocket bible stopped it.

50 years ago Röhm, Germany, made a cheap o/u Derringer in .38 Special, a near lookalike of the old Remington .41. As those things weighed less than a pound, 420 gramm, recoil using the regular 158 gr rn lead bullet loads was quite nasty. But it was quite manageable when using the then popular 148 gr wadcutter target loads.

These guys always had a booth set up at motorcycle rallies I attended when I had Harley's..

Never had an interest in them, even a little..but, they are built stout..

I shot one in .45 Colt, back in the 70's. I was doing a lot of .44 mag shooting at the time, and elected to only fire the 2 shots in .45 Colt. Recoil wasn't that hard, but the flip made the hammer dig into the web of my right hand. That was the nasty part.
Having only the trigger finger and middle finger holding on, was the problem.
Shooting 300gr. Truncated cone Bullet Barn cast with 20.0gr. W296 with the short round rubber grips on the 4" M29 actually stung the palm. Hell of a slap. with those shorty grips, 2 fingers plus the trigger finger, with the little finger curled under the grip was the problem.
With normal Pachmeirs or wooden magnum grips, those loads are quite manageable.
12 rounds rapid fire would make my hand bleed a bit, though. It would split a bit in the web. Need toughening up, I guess.

Looks good but too large, if a normal finger fits in that trigger guard?

Nice a matching folding knife.

They're not very informative. Are they all .45 Colt/.410?

.45 Colt sounds way too powerful. Buy a decent gun in it. But I suppose it could be loaded back.

Something more effective and larger calibre than a .22 Mag RF, But not sillily powerful. A Derringer which is not petite is not one as far as I am concerned.

Seriously how far away could one hit an 8 inch target away with one with one or two shots?

I imagine the .22 Mag ones are far more accurate to actually hit something with?

I think these Derringers are more a deterrent or extreme last ditch defence.

Would be fun to play with.

I think I recorded this somewhere yesterday.

A friend of a Kiwi acquaintance had a Derringer belt buckle. Unlike my own, which brass and hollow, his was real. Flew all around the world wearing it in the pre late 1990s.

One story about Thailand. He and friend were drinking in a Thai bar. When the bill came it was thousands of dollars. The two pretty girls chatting to them added a couple of zeros to the alcohol bill. They refused to pay. Two toughs turned up. Mate said "fuck this" and took off his shirt for a brawl. Heavily tattooed, the toughs thought he must be a gangster, as gangsters are very tattooed there and pulled back. The tattoos were the deterrent not the Derringer!
