Luftwaffe Survival drilling - J P Sauer & Son M30
      #253805 - 21/09/14 04:59 AM

An excellent example of a Luftwaffe Survival Drilling - J. P Sauer & Son M30, that was manufactured in 1942. 12-bore side by side with a 9.3x74R barrel underneath.

Issued to Luftwaffe air crews in North Africa and the Mediterranean as a survival weapon The combination of 12 gauge rifled slugs and the potent 9.3X74 rifle cartridge were capable of stopping most African game.

Sights are a gold dot front sight and a 100 meter rifle rear sight which automatically elevates when the rifle barrel is selected.

Here with its case.

The drilling's original aluminum case has a leather handle. The case has the original dark gray paint and the lid is stenciled: "Drilling M 30/mit Munition u. Zubehor" in two lines. The case interior is finished in natural aluminum with felt and wood partitions. The contents of the case are stenciled on the inside of the lid. The case contains the following items: (1) original manual entitled "Drilling M.30" dated "Ausgabe Juni 1941", (2) J. Pl Sauer pattern/specification sheet serial numbered to the drilling and dated "8 April 1942", (3) rare russet leather sling with keepers and (4) original black cardboard carton with partition for cleaning equipment that contains: three-piece wooden cleaning rod with wooden handle and brass tip, two rifle bore brushes, glass oil bottle, fiber bore and chamber brushes, cloth rifle and shotgun bore swabs, and brass patch jag.

Luftwaffe Field Marshal Herman Goering was an avid hunter and provided his air crews with the best possible equipment.

Luftwaffe eagle and swastika logo on the barrel.

Even though this is a military issue drilling, it has excellent colour case hardening.

Excellent colour case hardening.

Swastika insignia on the Luftwaffe Survival Drilling.

fine and correct collector guns
unfortunately many of this drillings in europe lost the bad eagle+swastika after the war because they were seen as hunting rifles. nobody think then about the collector value of this gun.

Anybody know how many of these were actually made?

I gotta tell you the whole concept of issue of such a gun is quite amazing. Really when you think of it, a very useful tool should a crew been wrecked in the middle of nowhere. IMO maybe the coolest "military" gun ever made.

Brings to mind Nansen's choice of a pair of combination guns for himself and Johansen for their amazing top-of-the-world trek in 20 ga by 9.3x57R/360. Interestingly their choice of rifle calibers was quite anemic considering the .360 isn't much better than a heavily loaded .357 Magnum in a rifle and they killed quite a number of polar bear with them. Wise choice tho since they had to haul them after killing the dogs, ammo weight was to be considered so 20 bore and the little 9.3 round made a lot of sense.

The M30 was really quite the Cat's Rat. Nothing a fellow couldn't handle in North Africa {or anywhere else!} with a 12 bore and 9.3x74R.

As for Wallace, he has a lot of kinsmen. I can't tell you how many primo old guns we used to take in that had the previous owner's Driver's License Number or Social Security Number electropenciled on receiver or barrel!!

These are a magnificent drilling but so hard to find and the price!! A while back I bought the modern version (now no longer made) its a J P Sauer & Sohn, Model 3000 in 12x12/9.3x74R, the main difference in both drillings is

Barrel

Model 3000 24" , M30 26"

12 Gauge

Model 3000, 2 3/4", M30 2 1/2"

Cheers
Steve

Steve

Your drilling is excellent and so similar. I wish I had one. And not having the history, you can use it well, and make modifications as you wish.

With one of these Luftwaffe drillings, really if in good condition, it should be guarded well, used but kept as a historical item.

John

I think the M30 looks better than mine the colour cased hardening is fantastic, hard to believe it was military issue

I imagine having Swastikas on your gun would neither have been popular, nor welcome, and perhaps even dangerous in the post WW2 period.

I would guess most of these intact ones were souvenired by Allied soldiers.

J.P. Sauer Drilling 12 Gauge/ 9.3x74R (S6287)

J.P. Sauer Drilling 12 Gauge/ 9.3x74R shotgun. Rare WWII Luftwaffe drilling in beautiful condition with a few light handling marks. The bores are mint, the screws are still indexed, a great piece in original unaltered condition. These guns were issued to North African Bomber crews to be used as survival guns if the plane went down. This one is in pristine condition.

Price:
$16,500.00

These guns have got to be about the most practical and useful powder-burners ever made.

Really, what can't fall to a 12x12x9.3?

Damn my Messerschmidt or Dornier has come down in Southern Sudan or Chad. I will use my Luftwaffe survival drilling to pot a brace of francolin or drop an elephant for rations.

What a lovely historical and very usuable drilling this would be to own.

Not the most practical choice for a survival gun, but damn I'd love to own one.
