Purdey Bolt Action Rifle in 416 Rigby
      #365008 - 29/04/22 07:33 AM

Nice looking rifle but obviously designed and built by someone who doesn't actually hunt.

Looks good to me, Matt.
Why do you suggest it was built by someone who doesn't hunt?

That stock styling is ugly, butt higher than the comb makes it look amateurish. And the long, pregnant grip, words escape me.

Because it has the sling swivel on the forend close to where you grip rather than on the barrel and the swivels are not quick detachable. Not many people hunt with a sling when things get serious especially with more dangerous game. Removing a sling from the swivels is a pain in the arse if they are not QD.

LOL- didn't even notice it has sling swivels. I was ogling the rest of it.

edited- went back and had a look-see - Oh yeah!

I disagree with Prairie Ghost - I like it (other than those sling swivels). That is a stock design that will not crack you in the cheek bone.

Can't see the need for the dog-leg front scope mount, when a straight one would match the rear one, look heaps better, and not obstruct the breech.
Agree with the front sling swivel observation too of course, but easily fixed.
Otherwise as Daryl says, wouldn't kick it out of bed for snoring...!

I like that rifle's shape.
On the con-side there is slightly too much engraving for my own taste and the scope mount is not best matching with the rifle's style, IMHO Holland & Holland or Suhl claw mounts would have been a more adapted (and more expensive) choice.

I still think they should stick to shotguns. Wouldn't worry about cheek slap. As high as the scope is would not even be on the stock.

I think most of us tend to throw our guns up with head down without having to realign the sights provided all is set up to fit. Claw mounts are great but this is at least .500 too high. Would work fine if time to set up but lousy for snap shooting. The most interesting thing about this rifle is the resemblance to all the American customs featured in the mid to late 70's Gun Digest from an English maker of their reputation. Seem to have abandoned 200 years of style and elegance combined with functional perfection. As to price for a Mauser actioned hunting rifle, well...... it is a Purdey after all.

Looks like the same mounts that are used on the Rigby Big Game rifles. I’ve got one, Rigby that is, in 375 H&H with a 1-4 Kahles. Great setup.

I guess it depends on how you were "taught to shoot".

When I snap a rifle of mine to my shoulder, I bring the gun up to my face/eye, not head down onto the rifle/comb.

All my guns have slightly higher mounted scopes and all fit perfectly.
The crosshairs (on my scoped rifles) are aligned on target as soon as the butt comes into the shoulder pocket.

That is the European "way".

This Purdey looks perfectly fine to me.

I'm not sure to be allowed to criticize a gunmaker as prestigious as Purdey.
This is a "Best Gun" as evidenced by the quality of execution, the choice of walnut, the detailed finish and of course the engraving.
However, some points bother me.
The action is obviously a top notch recent production system, certainly a Mayfair Engineering one, but I'm not at all a fan of the Recknagel ERA side swing mount on this type of high end rifle. It's a good industrial piece of mechanic, perfectly adapted to industrial rifles, but this Purdey deserved a better hand fitted scope mount.
Then I would say that, to my taste, they left too much wood (!) and that the stock would have gained in elegance and ergonomics with a more open grip without Wundhammer swell, less straight comb, a shorter forend and indeed the front sling swivels band fitted on the barrel .

Now all tastes are in nature and many will buy this rifle because the barrel is engraved with the Purdey name and address.

To each his own and good points all. .......many will buy this rifle because the barrel is engraved with the Purdey name and address. Fully agree with this statement.

Some good points raised. I agree about the sling swivels and a bit to much timber left on the forearm, thickness wise. I don't like those mounts and to me the scope is to high. Having said that the scope may need to be that high so the bolt handle clears it.

Yes the Europeans go for a low cheek weld (bottom part of cheek on stock) and heled the head straighter, I prefer the more English/US way.

Now my thoughts on this are worth stuff all as I can not afford to buy one even if I wanted to.

Rule, I believe you are correct about the scope and bolt clearance as the bolt is relieved toward the root. I can't afford it either so all is moot. But if it fell into my lap today it would be introduced to the rasp tomorrow! Have no fear.

On Android Firefox the image is fixed so one can't scroll down to see more than one third of it. Probably some java or fancy crap website design which doesn't work well.

I tried to open it again. Froze my browser for an hour or two. My fault? Too many fans open? But frozen by the purdey page. Shutting down the tablet. Reopen Firefox it all reopens. Still frozen.

Try duck duck go next time?

I want a look at the rifle.

Thanks. I will have to copy and shrink those images. Not having a working lap top is a pain.

The sling swivels are cheapie.

I think the style is best described as American Custom Classic.

I don't mind the style.

I don't have the Dorleac eye for detail. And Joel's rifles are far superior in every detail.

If you can reload the pics smaller please do so. They were that large from the download from Purdey and I didn't have time to fiddle and fix just wanted you to be able to see what the discussion was all about

IMO: This rifle was either made bespoke for an American, or my guess is it was styled to appeal to a typical $$$ American.
Nicely done rifle, unfortunately it just does not have "the look" one would expect from Purdey.
Sad to say but the majority of American shooters would really like the styling of this rifle. Of course that "carbuncle" of a scope is all the rage as well.
