Leather Cartridge Holder for 500NE
      #36459 - 25/08/05 08:37 AM

Can anyone advise me as to where I may purchase a holder for 8-10 cartridges for the 500NE? I want something that will attach to a wide belt as well as carry the cartridges.

Where are you located ?

(Update your profile so it shows a country).

I had to get a couple specially made so I could
carry 8 or so 500 Nitro's.

I could probably spare one if you are in Australia.

Westley Richards makes very nice leather cartridge holders.

I own cartridge holders from Murray Leather, Westley Richards and Africase. The cheesiest ones are Murray Leather. The WR ones are ok, but the leather is not near as thick nor the stitching as strong as Africase.

Check out the Lewis Drake website-

I recently got a very nice cartridge carriage system from them. It's essentially a leather pouch that'll fit a wide belt with a flap that covers the insides, it has a silent button type catch.
Inside is a removable stitched leather 'card' with loops that hold ten rounds of ammo, it can be used on it's own in a coat or trouser cargo pocket.
Ten 450#2 NE rounds fit nicely inside, I'm sure that 500 nitro would work out great in there, Mr Drake notes on the site that it's good for 600 nitro.

I think I paid something in the neighborhood of sixty dollars for it. I'm thinking of getting another and two of the smaller size just to get in on the opportunity to purchace them before they somehow end up dissappearing from his stock list. It's really a very nice piece of outfit.

I also would recommend checking out Africase ( www.heritagearms.net ), and what they don't make as standard, they'll make special for you, both with or without a flap etc. I have a friend that recently had them do so for his 470NE, and the quality was of course top notch.

I used 2 Africases while hunting tuskless elephant in Zim this summer, and was very pleased with them:

Aleko, the owner of Heritage Arms, is also a very nice guy to deal with, and will go out of his way for his customers. Something rarely found nowadays!

Oh yeah, there they are!

I use a home-made leather ammo wallet made by Kurt M_ years ago for his .475 N0.2. It is a better design than the ones pictured, and falls open when the press-stud is snapped. It carries 12 cartridges in two tiers of 6, all base-upwards when dropped open, 6-up and 6-down when closed. Its a good thing!

Any chance of a picture of the drop-open cartridge holder design?

Tony, send me a pic and I will see what I can come up with.
I made one a while ago that resembled a wallet that had a belt loop.
When the wallet floped down ,two sets of six rounds were displayed.

500grains & Alan:
Here's a couple of photos as requested:

Cartridge wallet closed:

Cartridge wallet open:

Don't get too concerned about the elaborate flap, the unit has seen many mango-seasons and its simply a press-stud repair which will never break again!

This design could easily incorporate stitched pockets for each cartridge, and a peg rather than a press-stud for the ligyrophobes.

I wear it right at the front like a spurren, so it can be dropped open and cartridges retrieved without taking my eyes off the quarry.

Better to stitch for each set of two cartridges. That way as you empty the holder the remaining cartridges won't clink together. If you stitch for every cartridge they can be sticky and difficult to pull out without looking.

What does 'ligyrophobes' mean? I want to know if I am one and if I should be insulted.

No offense Marraki, but I do not like the kind that flop down, as pictured. The reason is that once it flops down, it flops all over the place in the way if I have to run somewhere before having time to close it.

I have had to run with mine open a number of times, and your fears are unfounded. It probably flops a bit, but not to the point of being noticeable, and no cartridges have ever fallen out.

Still, each to his own...

Your hats fallen off, your sun glasses are backwards on your neck, your day pack, with a camera, tin of baked beans, banana, racing spoon, box of ammo and roll of bum fodder in it are bouncing round on your back. Your knife and water bottle are bouncing round on your belt, and your empties are flying every direction. And to top that off your (insert game animal here) is getting away/charging.

Last thing I'm worried about is a half dozen cartriges six inches below where they would otherwise be.

I have in the past used a cartridge holder that flops down, but found the flopping inconvenient and distracting. But I never took it DG hunting.

Marrakai,

I'm not the only one who thinks the flopping cartridge holder
is so so !!! I will agree with you though, I've never seen
you loose a cartridge.

Marty - I generally use my Quick Release buckles and drop my pack
and just have my ammo, knife on my belt making it easier to run.

I prefer my ammo up close and tight on the body.

Oh I try and drop it off. Next to a big tree so you can find it again. But sometimes it all happens and your hat, sunnies, pack, belt etc are all there on your back/head/neck while your taking the shot. And with all those distractions, a flapping cartridge holder is less of a distraction, than, probably everything else.

I bought my cartridge holder from Cabela's. They are made by Boyt and come in 5 and 10 round. They are for short mags and ultra mags. I found that the short mag holder worked better for fast reloading. I use them with 470 and 500 ammo. Never had a round come out that I didn't want to, even crawling on the ground. I did put rivets on corners to be sure stitching didn't come lose.

Just viewed the marvellous 10-cartridge Africase wallet on Ratel74's latest post, looks great.

Really gents, the 'flopping' issue is a 'red herring' imo, and I'm sure the new wallet design will be a success. Even though mine was made for the .475 No.2, it works very well with the .400 3-inch cartridges I most often carry, and I'm very happy with it. Here's a pic of mine at work in the hunting field last weekend:

I think Alan MacKenzie has it right on this.

I'm all in favor of going to saddlemakers or bootmakers and telling them what you want made...their work is normally as good or better than anything that is mass produced, and it keeps them in business, which comes in handy when you need a saddle and find out none of the mass produced ones fit your horse or your rear end.

Remember saddlemakers and bootmakers make all manner of leather goods. Saddlebags, holsters, belts, cartridge carriers, even belt carriers for your mobile phone if you want...

Richard.
