Black powder double ball charge weight?
      #362220 - 18/02/22 06:51 PM

I just cast some 690 RB to load in magtech brass and was thinking about trying some double ball loads out, I was thinking about trying 60-70gn, a fiber wad, RB, cushion wad and another RB with an overshot card.

Does that sound safe, I've seen fellas on YouTube load two RB over 90gn in 20ga muzzle loaders, but I don't know for sure what difference the brass case might make if any.

I cant imagine the case would fail unless there is something drasticall wrong with you chamber or breech block I dont know if I would use a double wad. Juist seat the balls on top of each other. I have never tried double ball load at all, not even in a M-Loader. You are pushing 1000 grains there, might start real low and work up a load. Your accuracy might discourage much testing. I once tried a buck and ball load in a 12 gauge flintlock, the gun weighed under 8 pounds. A 715 ball and six buck, about 850 grains and 70 grains of FF. Didn't want to shoot another!!! A standard 12 gauge paradox slug is 780 grains,,,,Ed

260rem. your load of up to 70gr. is easily OK, likely up to 100gr. or more, as well.

The velocity will be very low and I think you would be better off, most likely with anywhere up to 7 drams and one ball, however, that big load is hard on stocks.

I would find a load with a single ball that shoots under 6" groups at 50 yards.
A realistic max. load would be in the 125 to 150gr. area, 150gr. being in the 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 dram arena.

Probably right, I might try 4 58cal balls instead, it would still only need one to hit the vitals, but two or three would be devastating on pigs.

1 .70 calibre ball isn't deadly enough?
Guys in the states use .45 RB's on them from their flinters.
The odd guy uses his .62 smoothbore, usually with a .590" to .600" round ball & only 80gbr. 2F or less.

Buddy of mine up here has shot a LOT of moose with his .75 cal. Sporting rifle.
He now uses a .715" WW ball and .030" patch with 120gr. of 2F GOEX.
He started off using 200gr.2F and reduced his charge, year after year trying to get a ball to stay inside a moose. When he had dropped his load to 120gr., he succeeded in keeping a ball inside the moose.
Sounds like a lightly recoiling (respectively) pig load to me.

A patched 690RB pushed along by 90gn of FFF has mild recoil and hits pretty hard from a front stuffing 12ga so I guess it would be just as good from the magtech brass.
I will probably up that to 100gn for a bit more thump, I also like to cast my balls from pure lead, I like if they deform a little once they are inside, more choke friendly and they cast so much prettier then harder lead mixes do.

The cases should be here next week so that will definitely be helpful in letting me know if they will do what I want or if I should get a 720 SxS as well.

I will definitely try some buck and ball out too.

I got the cases yesterday, I tried loading a 690RB in a shot cup, but I had to pat h it and put it in a shot cup to hold in the case.
I'm thinking I will load a 690 in just a shit cup on a 1/2 fiber wad, then hold the ball in with a 1/4 fiber was as an over shot card held in place with some pva glue.

A ctg. gun will usually give better ballistics than a ML due to the lack of vent or nipple pressure/gas loss.
Don't forget to put a barrier between the plastic wads and the black powder.

I've got 1.5" of fiber wad, it should be fine but if it's not I will get some 11ga nitro cards and 10ga over shot cards.

I settled on some buck and ball loads, I tested them out in my single shot as it's my experimental load gun before trying them in something more expensive.
I'm pretty pleased over all, 2" group with the balls at 25m offhand with only the front bead.
No signs of any pressure and using the ballistol cleaning method they are not a lot of work cleaning the gun afterwards.
