Opinions on SIACE Yukon
      #362193 - 18/02/22 07:16 AM

All, looking for enablers...

Thinking of ordering a SIACE Yukon in 7x65R with a set of 16 gauge barrels. The taxes, shipping, duties, taxes, fees, and taxes are a little overwhelming relative to the cost of the gun, but I'm still interested.

What do you think about the Yukon? The 7x65R chambering? The extra set of shotgun barrels on a double rifle action?

Is it worth paying extra for the Lusso version?

Anything else I should consider?

Price Realized:
Estimated Price: $4,000 - $7,000

Nice rifle! Inexpensive as DR's go..

7x65R is a hell of a good ctg for NA game.

Daryl, Thanks for the reply. Yes I'm in Maryland, in the US.

I was thinking the same about the 7x65r. And the SIACE hammerguns look great in my opinion!

Lots of depreciation given the rock island price realized, though.

I do like the look of that rifle. I don't know the maker.

7x65R can do most things a .30-06 or .270 can do. Depends on what load(s) the DR regulates with. Anything in North America can be hunted with it. A 175 gr projectile in 7mm/.284. or if they work something lighter.

A set of shotgun barrels makes a DR more versatile. Given limitations the rifle's stock may have. Won't know until one shoots it. And if it fits anyway ...

Often a set of additional shotgun barrels is not cheap.

I like rifles and guns with hammers.

PS I have heard of SIACE in the past. Will have to refamiliarise.

skl1,
I think the 7x64 and its twin 7x65R are great cartridges. As John points out, they do virtually anything that a 270 WCF and 30/06 can do.
I also think hammers look nice on a DR. I shot skeet and clays with a double barrel 20 ga hammer gun. It takes a little practice (like anything else) but isn't really a handicap and adds fun to the shooting game.
Daryl pointed out that a SIACE sold fairly below expected price at auction. I have seen that happen before and also the opposite in which bidders drive the price skywards. I watched a gun sell yesterday got what I believe is twice its value. Auctions really show what the value of a specific item is at that moment with those active bidders, The sale price may be completely different on another day with different bidders.
Like John, I don't know much about SIACE but if you have researched them, and don't see negative comments, then that could be a great combination: DR & DB shotgun.

I was rather surprised there was not more engraving on the lock plates themselves, due to what appears to be extensive engraving around the plates
& on the hammers.

Well, I'm actually looking at the "standard" un-engraved version. It's a case-color hardened finish. Standard wood. Direct cost of the gun and two barrel sets are about $8K. "Lusso" with better wood and the sculpted action and engraving are another $2,250'ish. Add about $2,400 of shipping and import taxes.

I really like the engraving and wood on the Lusso though. Might be worth the extra cost.

I'll just add to this, is that I have a plain London "Field" 12 bore with hammers and damascus barrels. It also has 2 1/2" chambers which are no problem for me.(I had initially typed NP, but no, not nitro proofed) Even with it's cylinder bores, it shoots very well. I missed one bird in 20.

Love it - so "lively". Hope yours is as well.

$8,000 US sounds pretty good for two barrels sets new. Usually I would expect several thousand dollars for additional shotgun barrels from a cheaper double rifle maker. Much much more from a British maker.

I would also consider the upgrade at that price. Without seeing images, of course could be different.

The import costs do make it all add up. Can't import nowadays without substantial costs.

I would ask around how well they are regulated. Makes a big difference.

Maybe ask one of our Italian members. I'll drop Doticcho (splg) an email.

John, that'd be great. I have read several places that owners were happy with the regulation of their rifles. In general, regulated at 50 yards. I'm hoping to get this one regulated with a scope, at 150M or longer. They've said they'll do that, but they need me to get them the scope, which appears to be moderately difficult so far. But I'd like to be able to use it for a little longer shots.

Also, guys, thinking of having the regulation load be the Norma 160 grain Tipstrike load. Has to be a load available in Italy. And it's a fairly fast load (2789 fps). To me, ideally a double rifle would shoot parallel out to infinity instead of converging at 55 yards. They'll regulate out to 150 meters. But anyway, a fast load should allow me to slow handloads slightly and regulate further out. And while Norma ammo is hard to find, 160 grain bullets in .284 aren't (at least usually). Thoughts?

Yes if getting a rifle made for you, and you want it scoped, the regulation should be done with the specific scope on it.

With QD mounts you can see how well it will shoot without the scope afterwards.

160 gr sounds good. Exactly the weight I would use. Good compromise between the usual 140 to 150 grs. And the heavy 175 grs for larger medium game.

Yep the bullets ideally fly parallel and do not cross. Spot on. In the ideal world.

No idea what sort of bullets a "Tipstrike" is?

I concur with 85lc and Nitrox's with comments; the 7x65R is a much versatile calibre you would be able to hunt almost any game in the US, aside from bear. It would dispatch bear, of course, but without "enough gun" it would unlikely stop a charging one. I personally use 7x65R in a single-shot rifle in France, on all European big game from roe deer to red deer size.
Can you easily source reloading components - cases mainly, in the US?

"No idea what sort of bullets a "Tipstrike" is?"

Tipped open nose bullet for rapid expansion with mechanical lock of jacket to core. Similar to Hornady's Interlock, looks like to me. High B.C. and in a 7mm bullet weight I can pretty easily duplicate here in the US if I can't find Norma ammo or components:

https://www.norma-ammunition.com/en-us/products/dedicated-hunting/centerfire-rifle/norma-tipstrike

"Can you easily source reloading components - cases mainly, in the US?"

Not very common, but I've managed to find and buy 100 Lapua cases, which ought to last for 7 or 8 loadings anyway.

Standard version of the Yukon looks a lot like the Bernardelli hammer shotguns that were made from maybe the 70's to the 90's (SIACE took over Bernardelli's factory). I really like the look. But the Lusso is awfully attractive to me as well.

Would monoblock barrels put any of you off?

Skl1, if you are prepared to pay for shipping costs from France to US, I may give you 7x65R RWS empty cases fired only once , don't know how many exactly, probably between 100 & 200.

Louis, that's generous of you. Would love to have the brass. Sent a PM. But it isn't showing in my PM outbox. Will try again. Sorry if you get a duplicate.

Be careful about shipping even unloaded brass cases into the USA. Unless the ITAR Laws/Regs have been amended it requires Fed import permits. Last thing a USA gun owner needs these days is visibility with the Feds.
