Master Fox Trapper--1285 Fox in one season...
      #361076 - 26/01/22 02:49 AM

Phil Brown - from 2006-2007 he caught 1,285 fox that year - article was in outdoor life, he averaged over 20 fox a day on a long line... { This is a trapper in PA. He travels about 100 miles a day & averages 20+ foxes each day.} WOW!

Saw that, way back when. That is a LOT of upland game eating foxes, gone to their (or the trapper's) reward.

A hell of a lot more native game will survive without that lot!
Fantastic achievement to say the least, be a full time job just doing the tanning for this guy!

The amazing thing, not a single cross fox or black ones either. We have a lot of those here - not sure why.

Almost seems to be 50/50 here. We have a family of foxes living at the end of the street, denned up on Cranbrook hill, about 6 blocks from my house.
The female is red, with a black and silver male. The pups are mixed.

I'm more impressed by the amount of skinning he did, 20 foxes a day is a bloody lot of work to peal.

Was thinking of this on my way to work this morning.. Wonder what causes this?? I never saw a cross or any other color when I grew up on the farm in ND.. Only saw cross when I moved to MT 33 years ago.. and again, rare to see them..

Actually at the ranch its rare to see fox anyway.. too many coyotes I believe.. seems as hard as I try, trapping and shooting there are always more coyotes..

Back in 79/80, coyotes were bringing up to $250/$300.00 here. I sold a nice one to the taxidermist here in town for $100.00 - un-skinned and with a huge hole in one side. .257 AckImp 87gr. @ 3,650fps. 200yards. Bullet blew up on the hide, making a huge hole, removing almost all the ribs on that side and no touching the lungs or heart. Weirdest thing I ever saw. The hole was like 7" or 8" round.
The coyote was laying on his side, still breathing. I got back into the truck and drove up and killed him with the .22LR - one in the melon. This was on a huge 1/4 section field.

There is actually a little market again for coyotes.. nothing like the past, but , they are using the fur for lining the outside of parka's again.. fur is back..kinda.. I sold a few last year.. but hear they might bring up to $70.US right now.. have not verified that...

70$ ? thats not bad at all, a hardworking trapper can made a living with this but I suspect only for the best quality winter furs

and not shooting with the most powerful wonder magnum + a high explosive bullet

Still made some decent money back in the late 90% when fur bounced back, but then it went to crap again.
Atm I can still get $150 for a fox skin on ebay, but I've got to tan it and sell it with claws and paws still on.
So that's a lot more messing around.

I can't imagine turning fox ears, paws, claws, gums, teeth - yikes.
Bears and wolves were bad enough.
