Suhl Mauser questions

I found this 8x57 Mauser languishing in a local gun shop and picked it up very cheap, and thought it would make an interesting project. I believe it's one of the Suhl guns, double set triggers, colour case hardened action, and with the barrel dated Aug, 1920 with a bore of 7.8mm.

The barrel and action are in excellent condition except for missing DST parts, and I like that it's never been drilled and tapped. The stock needs a lot of TLC, but at least it's not been cut for a recoil pad and still has the steel butt plate.

A couple of questions I hope the members can answered.

With the 7.8mm bore would this be a 8x57I at .318 groove diameter?

Is there any source for the missing trigger and other parts to restore the DST?

I'm assuming that with the lack of serial number on the bottom of the action that the action originated as a surplus military action.

yes , try to restore the pics , they are essential

yes, chance is very high this having a 8x57I - .318 barrel, use only this. the action would be a WW 1 surplus action, sporterized a little bit. with patience you will find anything.

Anymore details of it would be helpful. Projects like this sure are tempting, but unless you have the ability to custom fabricate and fit together hand fit components, they can quickly run towards expensive. If it’s something you want to pursue and enjoy though, then who cares, it’s rewarding to bring something like this back. You could spend a decade looking for an original replacement trigger, but then it would have to be hand fit to it anyway, if you have to pay someone to fabricate one and fit it, that alone may run the entry price of the project.

While it maybe tough or impossible, more details might help determine who actually made it. The proofing is pretty early for a dated example, and it was done in Zella-Mehlis not Suhl.

I don't know when this started but it could still be a 8x57I

its not clearly to see if the set trigger is missing or broken. if broken you can dublicate the front trigger with a file , and let it tig welding to the rest.

Here's a couple of pictures (I hope) that may show better what's missing with the DST. Also a picture of the bottom of the receiver that may help identify the origin of the action.

this part is not imposible to make, need patience to find it but it will probably not fit



believe it or not but with time, little patience on the workbench and a good file you are able to make it

you must imagine Suhl in this days like an organism. there were gunmaker and there were other only making parts. maybe we had one or two firms specialised in making set trigger than where everyone get it than. the trigger were similar , maybe allways the same over a long time but allways hand fitted.

to get the rifle ready for shooting now you can change the set trigger against another mauser trigger.
maybe need another magazine too.

I want to express my deep thanks and appreciation to M. Joel Dorleac for his extremely gracious offer to send me the missing double set trigger parts. They arrived earlier this week and I couldn't be happier. After a little careful modification they should be an excellent fit. Depending on my time it might take me a week or two to complete the work, but as soon as I have it finished I'll post a couple of images.

I will definitely post some pictures as soon as I've fitted the triggers. I'm going to start this weekend; I want to take it slow and careful, so It might take a week or two depending on how much free time I have to spend on it.
