Ever since the .500 Smith & Wesson Magnum came on the scene in 2003, there have been a bunch of folks trying to figure out how to cram the cartridge into a rifle—especially a lever-action rifle. It’s an American obsession ever since the cowboy days: A guy “needs” to have a lever-action rifle chambered for his handgun cartridge. Whether that need is real or not can be debated elsewhere, but the perception remains steadfast. Most of the popular revolver cartridges—from the .32-20 to the .45 Colt—have been chambered in a lever-action rifle. However, when it comes to the .500 S&W Mag there are a few dimensional problems in getting that cartridge to fit into an established platform.

BIG HORN ARMORY WEBSITE INFO:

Proudly built in the USA, the Big Horn Armory Model 89 lever-action rifle in .500 S&W Magnum continues the rich legacy of American firearms design and development. Built from the ground-up and solidly engineered using the latest CNC technology, the Model 89 embodies the best of the old Model 86 and Model 92 lever-actions in a modern platform capable of handling the powerful .500 S&W Magnum. Both rifle and carbine models are manufactured with 17-4 stainless steel precision machined and properly hardened to deliver consistent downrange performance and rugged in-the- field dependability.

The selected American black walnut stock and forend are fitted with integral front and stud rear sling swivel mounts. The pistol-grip buttstock has a one-inch recoil-taming pad. Stock and forend are given several coats of a durable synthetic satin finish. The standard rifle and carbine are equipped with aperture rear and post front sights. The Model 89’s large, hunter-friendly curved- lever enables ease of operation, especially with gloved hands. Honoring the long tradition of great American sporting rifles, the new Model 89 .500 S&W Magnum provides hunters with pride in ownership, and a powerful advantage afield.

Interesting, but I've got a couple high-priced lever guns already, in .45/70 and .50/95.

Guess I'll have to watch Hickok on his own channel to see this video: "not allow International traffic.... at this time"

Perhaps it's because its a well known fact you guys in the north are dangerous and should not be trusted with a weapon of this capacity??

I found this really interesting that someone is offering a rifle inthe 500S&W.. would be even better IMHO, in a 460.. Wonder if that would make it interchangable with the 454 Casull like the revolvers??

Like you I also have levers in other calibers. This just seems like a very well made lever.. in a cool caliber is all...

Yes & I agree, the .460 would have been "better" perhaps.
There are some good bullet moulds though, in .500.
My .50/95 is currently using a 368gr. FN form a Lyman mould, however they, are .515" in diameter for the .513" groove dia. of the '76.
I am pushing them 1,650fps. not a max. load but close.
Those high pressure loads of the .500 S&W will exceed that, of course by quite a margin. My '76 holds 12 rounds with one in the chamber: that's 1 pound of ammo.LOL

Yeah, I read the 500S&W was coming out the barrel around 2000fps.. that's smoking for that size bullet...

That was a good video Ripp. I prefer this "style" of vid.
The results were interesting. I thought the .500 would fare better.
My "old" Winchester m94 Trapper 16" in .45 Colt, made 1,740fps with 320gr.FN and 340gr.FN Cast after I switched to W630 powder. With W296(H110), it made 1,584fps with a cast 300gr.HP and accounted for 2 elk, for me.
1,584fps as the BP original load for the .45/90 Winchester from an 86 - with 300gr. bullet.
No flies on any of those loads.

Often times when you see a feature, you need inquire as why that feature is there. It may have a purpose.

I like the concept of this rifle, but why the sow belly fore stock and canoe paddle butt stock? Is there a purpose?

Could the high straight line of the spine of the buttstock be to better manage recoil-straight back versus muzzle flip up. Or perhaps to accommodate scope mounting?

Sow belly fore stock, more gripping surface to control recoil?

I don't know. Thoughts.

I have been there a few times and I know 2 of their gunsmiths. The inside info tells me "hold off a while and wait"

Lots of problems, -------- not just with the guns but also with the business transactions. Getting them to function correctly has been a nightmare for them in the past. Sent out to customers and then getting them back again and again.

That's been 2 years ago, and so far I have not seen one yet that was as impressive as I'd expect for the asking price.

Thanks for that info Steve as I was seriously considering ordering on in 500S&W...

Too bad they can't figure that thing out...

Guys,
The Big Horn seems like a lot of money for a working rifle selling for much more that a Marlin 45/70 LA.
Also it seems like a 45/70 is comparable to a 500 S&W when fired from modern carbines.

I only paid $1,000 for my 1886 .45-90 and it took ele and buff in Africa with 450 grain mono metal solids at 2150 fps. No scope sights either.
The 450 grain Kodiak FMJ at 2150 shot through buff making them DRT. American Bison in Texas also.
Our handloaded 300 grain Nosler PP at 2200 fps whacked PG and nailed a big male leopard to the sand.

Sort of takes the mystery and exotic romance out African animals does it not? Maybe that is why certain RSA DG PHs hate American hunters bringing our "big" gun down.

PS the 1886 45-70 nailed buff too. It seems that with the proper .458 bullet, 1800 t0 1900 fps is the killing threshold.

I think all the Big Horns and Turnbull Dress Ups are great, but not necessary for dg.

Conflating the issue by droning on about overloaded .45-70's or whatever.

The .500 S&W chambering will appeal to guys that want a rifle that is compatible with their handgun cartridge (or they may just like a shorty .50 cal cartridge).
Doubt any buyers are thinking of taking a .500 S&W lever gun to hunt Elephant

You are exactly correct.. I have 2 45/70's.. along with 100 others I don't get enough time to shoot
, but yes, out on a horse ride.. you can have a 500 on your hip.. or can throw the same caliber carbine in a scabbard and use a rifle.. or take both..but one ammo..

IF I remember correctly, believe the old saying was 2000-2100fps was optimum back in the day for heavy DG bullets.. however, think a lot of the 458W Mags were much slower than the advertised velocity when it first hit the market due to several factors.. In todays world with better powders, its a better caliber carried by many in Africa..

One of the reasons I prefer the .416Rem.. cruising at 2350 to 2400 fps..works well on close up and personal to longer PG shots..

If they bring down 45/70s without knowing what they are doing, for probably good reason.

As silly if Brits kept saying they want to use a .577/450 M-H ...

Yep the .458 Win Mag in practice and in actual use developed a bad reputation precisely because of the inadequacy of the sub 2000 fps velocities. As a DG cartridge it nearly died. With new powders a resurgence.

Yet the .45/70 with even less velocity is so effective ...

I think I will have to try my .577/450 sporting rifle on buffalo!

Big Horn makes them in .460 and .454 as well as .500. The .460 and .454 are not the same gun unfortunately, it would be great for a rifle that would take both but they don’t.

These have been around for quite a while now so it’s interesting to see they still have issues with them. I wonder how much of that may be due to the wide flat nose bullet profiles that are prevalent in those cartridges?

I was getting 1,950fps with 552gr. hard cast in my .458 2". Elmer Keith said that would do just fine on Elephant and Buffalo. I might even still have that letter.
