I hope I am not beaten up too bad for this...

Technically my name has changed from iwantadouble to inowownadouble. It isn't a rifle, though. And it is far from what most of the posters on this forum would want to hear. The new addition is a Stevens (Baikal IZH43) Model 411. I know the whole Spartan/Baikal rifle (and its horrible choice of 06 or 45/70) is a no touch subject, but the shotguns really aren't all that bad; for what they are.

The gun has no pretentions of competing with the upper echelon of shotguns, or even the mid-range group that finds Rugers, Weatherby Athena D'Italia, and the like. For the use I intend to give the gun (pheasant hunting), I have no doubt that it will perform ideally. It functions flawlessly, shoots great, and is more "accurate" than I could hope for, swings fast and shoulders nice. Not great, but far from the worst shotgun I've shouldered. (Lets just say that it shoulders on me about par with a Holland 12ga that I recently shot, but not as good as a Ruger. Which is paining for me to admit, given my opinion on Rugers.)

And the main importance of this little scattergun is that it has effectively killed me from ever desiring to use a pump again. I can only hope that when I do purchase a double rifle and can spend the time sending copious amounts of nitrocellulose powder through it that my opinion of magazine rifles does not follow suit.

Even though they are as crude looking as they may be, I have gained a very new (if not reserved) praise for the little Russian imports that are flooding the market these days. At least in shotgun form.

Honest to goodness, working shotguns. If you want a gun to throw in your truck, get bumped about, covered in muck, wet, snow, sand, grit and still shoot when you need it to, you've got the right one.

Baikals are not fashionable, they are not elegant, they are not well finished. They are solid, reliable and like most other Russian equipment I've come across and used, they get the job done, simple, no fuss, no bother. Use it and enjoy, you won't regret it.

Exactly what I was trying to convey.

Glad you are enjoying your double.

No need to feel bad about a Stevens. My first double was an old 311 I bought from a pawn shop. It was heavy and not fancy, but I killed more grouse with that gun than my new fancy SxS.

How would you like another Stevens 311...it is a Sears/J.C. Higgins 101.7, same exact thing, and it is minty and in 16 gauge???

I admire my pedegree guns and use my others. One of my favorite grab it and go guns is an EAA 94 o/u in 12/7X57R. I paid a whopping $249.00 for it LNIB.It is rock solid and shoots exactly where it is pointed...every time. Although not refined, it is a working wonder! I scoped it with a Weaver K3 60 P&CH and get 1" groups with factory S&B 173 gr ammo.

I like it so much that I have plunked down a deposit on a Spartan SPR22 in 45/70, pending delivery in 4-8 weeks.

Have Fun,
L2S

I'm not sure if I mentioned it or not when we had lunch a couple of weeks ago, but my first shotgun was a Stevens 311. It fit me to a T, and was responsible for many Pheasant and Cottontail dinners.

Mike,

Thats right you did mention that your first shotgun was also a 311 like myself.

It was a great gun, just that the stock began to come apart several years ago... I have great memories of it though...

I plan on checking out the Stevens 411 this weekend. If for nothing else than nostalgia.
