Fraser 1893 Takedown
      #357861 - 06/11/21 11:34 AM

Hi All. I have an opportunity to buy the 1893 Fraser Takedown rebarrelled by Rigby in 265. It is in overall good condition with good barrel, action with Fraser trigger and good wood with nice checkering and cheekpiece. It has been drilled and tapped for scope mount and bolt Handle modified for the same. Not sure if this would be original or not. Not cased. Imported to AU from India in the early 80's buy current owner. They are asking 2700au for it. My question is about the availability of ammo and stripper clips for it and is the pricing fair. Thanks.

Bore condition is everything.
Listed as "very good condition" so if the seller is honest, no worries there.
Interesting that the listing says "made by Daniel Fraser" and "re-barreled by Rigby". Could simply be all Rigby with acknowledgement of Fraser's patent, for the trigger?

Probably a fair price in today's market (including covid tax!)
Take-downs are a bit special...!

Brass is made from .303 British if you can't find originals.
The clips are a bit hard to track down these days but they do turn up from time to time.

Nice looking rifle BTW.
Doesn't seem to have suffered from the usual post-Raj "India" symptoms, ie rust, borers, general neglect...

Thanks Marakai, It may well be a Rigby as the magazine has "Fitted with" Fraser trigger. Has the usual knocks on timber nothing too drastic. Has surface rust style patina on magazine but action and barrel look good. Once again just have to take seller at face value on the bore. It has Rigby "St James St" address. Takedowns are special, have an English period case would fit out for it. Also have a Greener Miniature Club Martini Takedown in case, a nail driver.

The take-down is surely 6.5x53R Dutch/Romanian, or .256 Mannlicher.

.265 is a typo.

There's a typo in the actual advert also, 6.5x52R.
...but there has always been a bit of confusion over whether or not the rim is included in the overall case length. Case is actually closer to 54mm, usually listed as 53.5mm long.

Regardless of the math, its the rimmed version of the 6.5x54 Mannlicher Schoenauer, and as such is a highly respected vintage hunting cartridge.

Be very careful as that rifle has been for sale on and off for almost ten years. Originally he wanted over $5K for it. I asked him to send me photos and to start with he said he didn't know how to send any, so I said no thanks. He then learned how to but sent these really poor quality ones from his mobile phone so again I said no thanks as I couldn't tell condition or how good the modification was. Then he learned how to take good quality photos and I could see why he didn't want to show them first time round. I would be very careful buying it if I was you.

As to bore condition, most 1895's have been shot using early ammunition which produced a lot of heat and as a consequence often have severe throat erosion which doesn't show up easily if you look with the naked eye, only a bore scope will tell.

As Marrakai said brass can be formed from 303 brass or alternatively Bertram makes correctly head stamped brass. Clips can be found on eBay on and off. Here is a link to a guy in Holland selling some, I have bought quite a number of clips off him and most were excellent, almost as new.

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/282763112935?hash=item41d5feb1e7:g:UlIAAOSwPAxaKKmt&frcectupt=true

Hope this helps.

Matt.

FYI the clips can be obtained here https://www.gunpartscorp.com/gun-manufacturer/dutch/mannlicher-1895?page=4
I don't know if they ship to Aus but worth a try at the price. I have purchased a dozen or so and they look new.

Thanks for the info.
Likewise the photos looked like they had been taken with a potato. Still, obvious corrosion to the mag. Listed as very good. Bore, who knows.
Said no at this price. But it must have an intrinsic base value as a collector only. Thanks again.
