Your "Go To" handgun
      #353927 - 31/05/21 11:11 PM

We tried this with rifles, so I thought this might be fun too. Whats your Go To handgun? What do you OR would you carry everyday.

I used to be the guy who wanted the newest bestest coolest handgun with the biggest mag etc; but something changed--I retired and moved away from Baltimore (we call it Bodymore Murderland). Now Im a SAA guy, ok maybe a few SAAs guy; but thats mostly for fun.

A few years ago I set a pair of 5 1/2" Vaqueros to Gary Reader for some upgrades (bigger grip, octagonal barrel, and some slicking up). One of them are almost always with me. Now Ive got a serious lust for the Sheriff's models. Ive got a few 3 1/2" barrels but I want something like a 2 3/4" and maybe without a front sight. It needs to be engraved and with some ivory or pearl grips TOO!

Anyway my Go To is a SAA in 45 Colt, whats yours?

My go-to-the "range" hand gun is a 1970 Ruger Blackhawk .357 mag. with .38 spl. ammo.
.38 SPL. Colt Police Positive & of course my M29 4".
I usually take all 3. Plinking steel with the Ruger, some fast DA work on the plates with the Colt & plinking steel with the 44.

I like a steel 1911 style pistol like a 1927 Colt 45ACP. Also pre-war HiPowers are nice.

For hunting, I may use a late 1950s Ruger Blackhawk (old model) 44, a Ruger Super Redhawk (Casull), or a Glock 40 w/220 gr HC bullets.

How to carry. The wheels retract when I'm ready to shoot.

I don't really have to "go to" a handgun because I wear one every day from the time I put my pants on until I take them off. I have carried a handgun as a private person or as a professional almost every day of my life since I was 15 years old. Over 1/2 a century now.

What gun? Can't say there is "one". There are a few.

I live out in the country and so I have opportunities to fire at skunks, foxes, coyotes and raccoons fairly often, and I live a short distance from areas where we have a LOT of grizzly bears. So depending on what I am doing, I carry different guns.

I tend to shoot revolver more accurately then I do most autos, so for "field guns" I prefer revolvers. Around the home it's common for me to carry a 6" 357 S&W or at times a 22. If going to town, I carry autos, mostly one of my 45s, but I have carried 9MMs at times too, as well as a 2.5" J frame 357.

If going to the hills where the bears are I carry a 44 mag or a 454 Casull.

If I want to enjoy some shooting it's common for me to get out one of my 9MMs which are accurate and fun to shoot and cost me much less in lead then my 44s or 45s, but that's not to say I don't still go through a lot of lead in the big bullets per year. I do. But the 9MMs allows me to shoot more.

For the times I am around people in the towns of cities I prefer to carry an auto because they carry easier and are shorter and flatter then my revolvers, but Wyoming is a Constitutional Carry State and it's very common to see open carry in stores, restaurants, churches and all around town, so if I am lazy and don't take the time to switch over to an auto it's not all that uncommon to see one of the big revolvers riding on my hip.

Of the 50 states in the USA Wyoming has the largest number of guns owned per capita of any state, and if you exclude the Reservation (which legally is a different country) we also have the lowest crime rate. We have around 490,000 people, and the state is 93% the size of Germany.

The "rez" is part of a totally socialist country and government, and depends 100% on welfare and tax subsidies,(taxed from the rest of the USA) and if you look at Wyoming geographically and include the "rez" we rank in the middle of the states for Violent crime. 26th out of 50. But if you separate the socialist reservation (Indian Nation) from the statistics, we come in 50th out of 50. On the Reservation guns are regulated and "controlled" but rape, murder, battery, arson, drug crimes, robbery and theft are not for the most part. Cops say "they can't do anything".

The Reservation has a population of about 14,000, but that small population can take the crime rate from 50th place to 26th place all by themselves. 14,000 socialist and 490,000 Wyoming Residents Socialism Vs Constitutional republic. Gee.........I just wonder which is a better system????????

Oh..........what a surprise huh?

Back to the point of the thread:

My "go to gun is what ever I have on. MY HAND GOES TO IT if I need to shoot something "right now".

At this very moment it's a 6" K frame 32-20.

Many days it's a Ruger 22, and many others it is a 357, a 44 Special, a 45 revolver or a 44 mag.

Any gun will do if you can do the job with that gun.

Like others, I do tent to carry what I think may be the best choice for that day, but I am not all that dedicated to one gun or caliber. Around the homestead here a lot of power is not usually needed but accuracy and some flatness of trajectory are useful. Varmints are often moving and not all that close when you need to shoot.

If I can "go to a gun" I go to a rifle ---- EVERY TIME! That is a scoped 308 Auto-loader or a scoped 223 auto-loader.

Handguns are for those times you don't have a rifle. You don't schedule emergencies. If you could they would just be situations, not emergencies.

If you have any time to prepare, (even 4 seconds) you grab a rifle of shotgun. Handguns are used when there is NO time to prepare and get to a rifle or shotgun.

VERY well stated Steve.. and like you, my carry choices are very similar.

Montana is also a constitutional carry state.. signed by our new governor .. was put forth numerous times to the previous Dem governor but he would not sign it.. IMAGINE THAT.. liberal prick..

Like you, I have a handgun within my reach at all times... and have been carrying for the past 40 years +.. I am in the towns a lot so carry concealed often.. usually a Sig 365 or recently picked up a S&W Shield Plus Performance Center.. has a 4" barrel and shoots very well..prior to that I carried a S&W Shield A LOT --had it tricked out by a local gunsmith..

On the ranch if I am riding on my horse checking cattle I normally have a revolver on me.. S&W J Frame in .357 loaded with Buffalo Bore .. or a 45 Colt caliber .. If in griz country.. 44 Mag or Freedom Arms 454 Casull .. also loaded with Buffalo Bore ammo. As Steve says, a rifle is better.. if on my horse in griz country also take a rifle scabbard and put my Marlin 45-70 in it..

In my vehicles I have high capacity semi-auto's.. H&K or Glock..

Traveling with family I usually have a AR style pistol tucked in my luggage for overnight stays in Hotels.. with more than on 30 rd mag.. recently switched that to a 300BO..red dot sight..

In addition to a handgun I always carry a knife.. recently switched to a nice Benchmade Auto.. called the CLAYMORE.. nice and light with a very fast spring on it.. serrated blade which I prefer.. for a fight a smooth blade is better..but then, in a "real" fight that is what the handgun is for..

My dearest American friends: All y’all got your head screwed on straight!!!

I live to the north of you in a communist country where carry of any kind is forbidden for us mere mortals that make up the unwashed masses. In spite of the draconian nanny laws we have up here, the gang bangers at Jane & Finch carry and get a LOT of target practice in every week……. And it’s spreading and spilling over into a lot of really nice neighbourhoods. I myself can only prance abound the house late at night with the shades drawn tight wishing I could actually go out the front door with my IWB leather and Dan Wesson Commander. .

Sorry for the large quotations but a lot of soy drinkers here would shit their panties if they saw or lived in such a place.

BTW I understand very well the USA statistics of comparing normal places and including the racial ghetto crime numbers which inflate the results for good normal honest people.

My go to in my socialist paradise is not of course a handgun ... a leatherman set of pliers, scissors, with a couple of fairly blunt (atm) knives. Carried legitimately as a pocket knife and pliers for all sorts of legitimate tasks. I do have to remove it and leave in the car if I remember.

Honestly, if we had concealed carry here. I wouldn't bother though. Have rarely felt the need, 99% of the time. When I have felt the need, as a couple of times in the outback, we have always had hunting firearms along.

Lets be really clear, there are LOTS of places here in the US where carrying a handgun is a crime and even more where mere possession is so restricted that it is in effect a ban. There are far too many places were rifles and shotguns are restricted by how they "look". There are even places where a muzzleloader must be transferred in much the same way as if purchasing a machinegun. We are all not so free as many would hope; but none of those laws actually stop a criminal from committing crimes. Laws are nothing but black ink on white paper, they STOP NOTHING. At best laws only apply penalties IF caught AND convicted.

That being said, I do not carry a handgun for the 99% of the time I dont need it. I carry a gun for the 1% of the time when I might need it BECAUSE in those times a handgun is way better then a sharp stick and harsh language. Now mind you I take great pains to avoid those 1% times. I do not willingly travel into "those places" freely and without some trepidation AND when I do I consider the greater risk. Is it more of a risk of getting caught with a gun where I cant have it OR more of a risk getting caught without it when I NEED IT.

There was a time when I might have felt well armed with a pocket knife and martial arts training but life (age) and life experiences have taught me differently. No more is the mythological lone mugger a fantasy I can picture. Street crime is no longer a sole attacker armed with a screwdriver, its now him and his "Boyz" armed with handguns and motivated to take what theyve been taught you owe them. So I carry what seems appropriate for the risks, some days its a single action Colt and some days its a beltfed flame throwing grenade launcher.....

Agree with the 99% vs 1% as well..in the times I have used one or needed to has been, happy to say, very very seldom in my lifetime..BUT, the times I did was VERY happy that I had one..

As you stated, was watching a news show last night with the female host stating the same thing you mention above.. She lives in NYC.. stated, she is asking her LE friends what to do because if she is forced to shoot someone there SHE would more than likely be in more trouble than the person trying to assault her..liberal politics.. like most of their ideas, are beyond stupid..

With the current state of the world, my plans to travel near any of these places are on hold.. Have absolutely NO desire to travel to any of those liberal run shit hole areas..

This was on the tube last night.. Guess what is their one common denominator??? ALL have Liberal Democrat mayors.. shocker I know..Letting criminals free as soon as they are arrested, lowering LE budgets, not having the LE backs seems to be working really well..

I myself can only prance abound the house late at night with the shades drawn tight wishing I could actually go out the front door with my IWB leather and Dan Wesson Commander. .

MY GOD you made me laugh.. and caused a hell of a mess of me spitting out coffee..

It was a visual of you prancing around in your home with the shades drawn.. albeit a bit creepy as well..

Hey Art:

I do prance around with my pants on if it makes you feel better!!!! . I need pants to have a waistband to mount the IWB in, otherwise all bets would be off!!!!!!!
